I am the right therapist for you if you continue to suffer with depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, grief, unhappiness and a sense of disconnection from the deeper sense of who you are. I will teach you how to feel better about your life with the skills of yoga: breath and meditation; calming your upset or sick body and quieting your constantly negative thoughts. Psychological and medical research support that Yoga, while an ancient philosophy, teaches easy to learn skills that improve physical, emotional and spiritual health. You have taken the courageous step to begin therapy. You likely know that your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and even the sensations you feel are distressing. These patterns are hard to break. You may be re-living pieces of trauma on a daily basis. You may feel on edge, exhausted, and frustrated due to the impacts of chronic stress or secondary trauma; or the opposite: disconnected, numb and lethargic. As a trauma therapist and Certified First Responder Counselor, my goal is to connect with you and assure you that you are not alone. I know everyone is capable of healing, and it is an honor to join you on your journey to wellness.

I believe that to understand ourselves and our difficulties, we must explore those aspects of ourselves that are not fully known while looking for patterns of unhelpful behavior that we often repeat. We must then develop new ways of thinking and being. I realize that therapy can be confusing. It can be difficult to find the right therapy and therapist. My first goal is to help you understand the process of therapy and how we might work together. My hope is that you will not only find relief from your symptoms, but that after therapy ends, you will have a better understanding of yourself and go on to have a more fulfilling life.

Managing the stressors that life throws at us can be challenging! The path through life is rarely smooth, and we all navigate the terrain in our own, unique ways. Often, we have the tools to manage the obstacles on our own; other times, that path is wide enough to allow support from others as we move forward. Still other times, we can’t even find the path! I strive to promote an environment in which clients feel safe to share experiences at their own pace and without judgment. I believe that a genuine approach, supported by evidenced-based treatment models, cultivates the rapport necessary to promote positive change.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
