I treat all anxiety disorders, and have particular passion for, and expertise in, treating OCD across the lifespan.
As a fellow parent, I understand that there is no greater pleasure than to see your child happy and healthy. But excessive worrying, relentlessly demanding OCD rituals, the fear of vomiting, social anxiety, and self-harming behaviors like hair pulling and skin picking can rip away the joy of childhood and bring anguish to the family. I am a warm, compassionate, and very active cognitive-behavioral therapist with many years of success in helping children and teens recover from these challenges. I work as a team with parents, including them in at least part of every session.

I am a licensed psychologist who helps people struggling with difficult issues like anxiety disorders, OCD , chronic insomnia, and panic attacks. I love working with people who have been told their OCD and anxiety symptoms are "difficult to treat" or for whom therapy has not been effective in the past. Because different types of therapy work better for different people, I use cognitive, behavioral, and person-centered approaches to healing. I strongly believe therapy should always be about improving your life however you want to live it – never about what a therapist believes would be best for you.

I'm Alex, and I specialize in treatment of anxiety disorders, perfectionism, and OCD .
Overwhelm, overdrive, over it. Sometimes, despite all our energy and pushes to move forward, we end up feeling stuck. We might tell ourselves “I just have to get through this one deadline/phase/event/season” and then things will be okay. And yet, the rest doesn’t seem to come. My clients often find themselves left wondering when all of that effort will lead to a break. It’s a rigged game- society tells us to keep working, but the finish line always seems to be moving. If you are feeling ready for a shift, but unsure where to start, that’s where I come in.

Are you consumed with disturbing automatic thoughts, and spending hours chasing, analyzing, reviewing, and giving meaning to the intrusive thoughts? There is hope and recovery to overcome OCD . I will teach you how to change your relationship with anxiety by looking it in the face and walking towards it instead of walking away. It is easy to stay trapped and believe the false messages that your OCD feeds you. I will teach you how to rewire your brain into no longer believing those false threats that your brain is torturing you with. My treatment approach teaches you how to stop competing

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Anxiety.
As a therapist, I believe it is particularly important to create a space where clients are able to openly consider the changes that they would like to see in their own lives and relationships and learn, grow and expand to make those changes to see what life becomes. My area of particular expertise is exploring the entire system during the therapy process, with the understanding that we are all deeply impacted by the people that surround us.

In my 24 years of practice I have helped adults, children and teens overcome a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, anger problems and alcohol/drug addictions using traditional (cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy) and non-traditional (Eastern philosophy and meditation, and art therapy) methods. I believe that all people have the ability to help themselves, but sometimes due to overwhelming life circumstances, hardships, and crises; they become "stuck."

I have been working within a medical pediatric practice for the duration of my career, and as a result see a number of children and adolescents in the Maryland and Washington DC area. Treatment with this population generally focuses on developmental, behavioral, academic, social, and family issues. I also see a number of adults on an outpatient basis and greatly value this aspect of my practice as well. Anxiety, depression, loss, and relationship issues are the primary focus of my work with adults, adolescents, and children. If you are planning to use health insurance please indicate whom your provider is.

My years of experience and training have taught me the importance of good listening. By learning who you are and what you want in your life, I am best able to help you restore or enhance the quality of life you seek. I limit my practice to adults in individual therapy or relationship counseling. While there is no magic in therapy, there is an opportunity to feel better now, avoid future emotional pitfalls and be better able to deal with those that cannot be avoided. As a compassionate and experienced professional, I look forward to assisting you.

Dr. Good specializes in marital therapy. He is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work and has worked with couples, families and individuals in the Annapolis community since 1978. We uncover the brokenness in each person and the relationship(s). We gain accurate pictures (perspectives) of you, me and our relationship. We reconnect, repair disagreements, forgive, and create a climate of acceptance and appreciation. Finally, we build a team. His favorite sayings are: "The person is more important than the problem," "Everyone walks through life a little differently," and "Maybe you're right!"

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
