Hi, I’m Dr. Josh Gonsher, a licensed clinical psychologist with a warm, down-to-earth approach to healing. I specialize in helping people navigate anxiety, worry, and stress—not by fighting their symptoms, but by creating a new internal landscape where those struggles no longer take center stage. My approach is grounded in Contextual Therapy. I don’t just help clients “fix” thoughts or behaviors—I work with them to build a more meaningful life, one where old patterns and problems naturally begin to lose their grip. It’s about shifting the frame, not just adjusting the picture.

Finding the right therapist can be a daunting task. I had challenges finding the right therapist for me as I was recovering from serious medical diagnoses that unexpectantly derailed my life. I never found that therapist who understood how lost I was during those times. Once I healed and found my path, I vowed to become a therapist for others that I needed years ago. I believe in the power of connection, resilience, and the inherent capacity for growth and healing. My approach is rooted in curiosity and possibilities, emphasizing empathy, authenticity, and the recognition of each person's strengths and potential.

Therapy can be an intimidating process. How often have you pushed your mental health aside because life grew hectic; were told to “practice self-care” but aren’t sure what that entails; or been told to “just get over something” and you’re left feeling lost or overwhelmed? Being a human is challenging! We’re filled with complicated emotions that derive from our lived experiences, environment, family dynamics, personality, and genetics. My goal is to help you sort some of that out to relieve depression, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict.

Starting therapy can be scary. You have to talk with a stranger about your most private worries. But somehow, if we make a connection, the therapy space feels like a safe place to talk and feel and be curious about your anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma or whatever nudges you to seek extra support. To me, therapy is all about exploring your inner landscape, finding helpful ways to soothe yourself, developing self-compassion, untangling old stuff that still gets in the way, and becoming empowered to make healthy choices. As hard as we work, we can laugh together, too! Laughter is good medicine.

My “ideal” client is someone who has difficulty communicating, in social (family, peer, etc.) situations, or internalizes feelings and thoughts to an unhealthy degree. They want to be more assertive, better regulate their internal state, learn better communication skills, or have better relationships with others. They want these things because they have an earnest desire to connect with others and/or to make a change in their daily life.

Self Esteem Therapists
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
