Relationship Specialist for Couples, Veterans, and Non-Monogamy - It can feel exhausting when the arguments with your partner follow the same script, leaving you feeling more like roommates than a couple. You might be lying awake at night, replaying conversations and wondering how the connection you once had has faded. If you feel stuck in these patterns and are searching for a way to improve your relationship, you don't have to find the path forward alone. My approach is collaborative and focused on creating lasting change.

Hi, I’m Dr. Josh Gonsher, a licensed clinical psychologist with a warm, down-to-earth approach to healing. I specialize in helping people navigate anxiety, worry, and stress—not by fighting their symptoms, but by creating a new internal landscape where those struggles no longer take center stage. My approach is grounded in Contextual Therapy. I don’t just help clients “fix” thoughts or behaviors—I work with them to build a more meaningful life, one where old patterns and problems naturally begin to lose their grip. It’s about shifting the frame, not just adjusting the picture.

I've been working in the behavioral health field for over 10 years and enjoy helping people learn how their minds work. Throughout my career, I've worked with adolescents and adults of all ages, individuals, couples and families. I offer psychodynamic psychotherapy. My counseling philosophy is rooted in existential and spiritual traditions with particular emphasis on the inherent human need for meaningful connection in life. From this perspective, the ultimate goal of therapy is to optimize our connection to ourselves, others, and a meaningful spiritual life.

Life can be hard at times. Trust me, I get it. Navigating our interpersonal relationships can be difficult. Whether it is challenges in our romantic relationships, managing our children’s behavior concerns, or establishing healthy boundaries with our friends and family – It can be tough. Struggles in relationships can lead to depression or anxiety, self-doubt, or lack of confidence. Often we know that we want a change, but be unsure how to achieve that change.

Change is happening within us and around us all the time. Even when we feel the most stuck in old habits and patterns that no longer work for us, we are still changing. Counseling can help us see these patterns and shift the dynamic to help us move and grow in ways which reflect our wishes and values. I enjoy listening to the stories other people tell me about their lives. I like to help them identify and enhance their strengths and to find the patterns of action or inaction that need to shift to allow for new growth.

We all get to a point where the suffering becomes more than we can handle, and we all have to find ways to cope with it. My goal is to help relieve people of suffering caused by maladaptive patterns of feeling, thinking and behaving that they have been conditioned to repeat over time. I do this by building a relationship with them, then allowing that relationship to be the template for healthy interactions in life and a realistic perception of themselves and their situation.

Often times, individuals and families struggle with issues beyond understanding or don't have an individual to provide an unbiased approach to life's problems. Sometimes those seeking therapy have a support system that doesn't know how to best assist in their issues. Some individuals don't have a support system and need help navigating isolation. Some couples want to feel heard, validated, and respected by their partner and struggle with communication. In all, therapy can provide a safe place for positive growth to occur as individuals, families, and couples work to achieve healthier approaches to a majority of life's problems.

Most men we work with are high-functioning on the outside but running on overload internally. Professionals, business owners, and leaders who have been pushing through stress, anxiety, irritability, or relationship strain for years. What brings them in isn’t curiosity—it’s friction. Work feels heavier, relationships feel more strained, patience is shorter, and the strategies that used to work stop working. They’re not looking to be analyzed—they’re looking to get back in control.

I do therapy backwards. I help people first find acceptance of what's challenging them, and focus on making that feeling of discomfort feel safe. I believe that allowing the experience of the full range of human emotions is key to reclaiming and strengthening our emotional resiliency. We can accept the presence of discomfort and feel joy, while identifying and making changes based on who we want to be or know we are. My therapy practice is based in an understanding of the nervous system, mindfulness, and the ways we all experience and react to trauma and distress.

My ideal clients include those with depression and trauma backgrounds, substance abuse histories, spiritual concerns, and men's issues.
The first steps to a counseling session can be scary, but it is also a courageous act in understanding yourself and living a more engaging life. My philosophy in providing care has always been "helping others help themselves." I believe that each individual has the ability to change and grow in their journey. In sessions I provide a safe, compassionate, and collaborative space. I will also acknowledge that our world is vastly different and more chaotic than it was a few years ago - political discourse, racial injustice, climate change - and I will do my best to offer you some direction in these collective struggles.

For me personally, I find that any client is an ideal client. Every individual has within them their own internal timeline, mechanism, and capacity for change that is inherently correct for them. I do my best to respect this as a clinician. I do ask for an honest accounting of oneself to the best of their ability. If this is successfully reached, then the possibility for healing and moving forward from mental anguish is possible. It is my professional belief that when both the client and the therapist are fully open to the process that the work truly begins.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
