I help men, women, and adolescents overcome challenges related to depression and anxiety.
Our first session together will involve us getting to know one another better, and I will need to obtain a lot of background information, in addition to what is currently bringing you into therapy.

I work best with clients who are ready to actively engage in their healing journey, even when the work feels difficult. I support individuals who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or weighed down by trauma, anxiety, triggers, or life experiences and want to build healthier coping skills and emotional balance. I especially enjoy working with neurodivergent, queer, LGBTQ+, and polyamorous clients seeking an affirming and supportive space. Together, we work toward understanding symptoms, processing trauma, and learning how to move through triggers so they no longer control daily life.

Hello! Therapy and choosing to engage with oneself on an intimate and vulnerable level can be an intimidating and frustrating experience, but making that decision, for yourself, can ultimately be one of the most rewarding things you can do. Choosing to know yourself and be compassionate towards your behavior and experiences can lead to not only tangible change but also fulfillment and a more well-rounded and positive outlook on life.

I am a Licensed Clinical Profession Counselor for the State of Maryland with many years of experience helping adults and teens learn coping skills and improve their quality of life.
Whether you are going through a big life change, trying to meet your responsibilities while living with a chronic illness, struggling to get through the day with an ADHD brain, or trying to manage your life but continuing to drop the ball, I can help you figure put the pieces back in place. I specialize in anxiety, depression, ADHD. I have a particular passion for working with Highly Sensitive People (HSP) — those who feel things deeply and need a therapeutic space that honors that sensitivity rather than pathologizing it. I also work with clients managing chronic pain and illness who want to show up more fully in their lives.

I specialize in working with teens & adults who often make themselves small or worry about keeping others happy, but they're tired of struggling with the low self-esteem, relationships, or trauma that's holding them back.
You’re the one who holds it together. The one others rely on. You show up, take care of things, and keep going, even when it feels heavy inside. People wouldn’t guess how much you carry. But when everything gets quiet, your mind doesn’t. You replay conversations, question yourself, and wonder if you did something wrong. Your body stays tense, like you can’t fully relax. You’re always a little “on.” You’ve learned to be the strong one, the one who doesn’t need too much. But underneath, you’re exhausted. These patterns begin in childhood, when you had to adapt or take on more than you should have.

I enjoy working with teens and adults who are navigating a variety of issues including life transitions, struggles related to gender identity and sexuality or navigating ethical non-monogamy.
I believe it is important to acknowledge how race, gender, sexuality, and culture impact our lives, our struggles, and contribute to our strengths. I draw from a variety of modalities depending on client needs including ACT, CBT and DBT. I also have some training in I-CBT. I use a trauma-informed, collaborative, strengths based, and client centered approach.

Often we are faced with decisions that will have a big impact on the course of our life. Even if we already know the better option, it can feel totally overwhelming thinking about all it takes to make the change. Whether it's an addiction, loss of sense of self, or religion, everything else can slip to the background making it hard just to get through the day. When we work collaboratively in therapy, you will experience new things about yourself and what your priorities really are while letting go of what we are told we should be or do.

Selecting a therapist is an important decision. I believe that creating an environment where the client feels that the therapist has listened, shown empathy, and has genuine concern are some of the core conditions for a therapeutic relationship. Providing a client with helpful feedback in this safe, empathic environment promotes change and growth. A client that I work with may have a variety of concerns including having a relationship issue, going through a separation, having parenting concerns, experiencing depression, anxiety, or problems related to alcohol or drug misuse or abuse. Please visit my website www.scottholzmanphd.com.

Many of my clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, or major life transitions. They may be struggling to cope with change, feeling emotionally drained, or looking for a safe place where they can feel heard, supported, and understood without judgment. I work collaboratively with clients to help them make sense of what they are experiencing, build healthier coping skills, and move toward greater emotional balance, resilience, and meaningful change at a pace that feels right for them.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
