My primary orientation as a therapist is somatic, meaning as we explore conditions of the mind, we lend attention to conditions of the body. A somatic approach to therapy aims to lessen automatic responses involving stuck patterns of fight, flight and freeze. It can also help the nervous system learn to better regulate stress and activation.
I am an advanced-level student of Somatic Experiencing, a body-based approach for resolving trauma-based symptoms. If you find yourself dealing with reactions, behaviors, or symptoms that seem automatic (despite your best efforts to change) a somatic approach may be worth exploring.
A somatic approach can work well in treatment of sudden shock traumas, such as car accidents; or developmental, childhood, and relational traumas, the effects of which can linger for years.
I bring both cultural competency and cultural humility to my work as a counselor. My approach tends to be direct and well-attuned. I'm also pretty down-to-Earth.
