My name is Mary Hanley and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) from Long Island, New York. I have over 6 years of experience working with people affected by cancer and other chronic illnesses, people who are grieving, and those affected by mood disorders. Most of my clinical work involves a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Mindfulness and somatic experiencing are often features of this work. In my previous experience with clients facing a terminal illness and/or experiencing suicidal thoughts, Existential Therapy was an approach I often used as well.
I am a calm, non-judgmental listener and I am very thorough in trying to understand your feelings and your situation with minimal bias. I work from a place of unconditional positive regard, so you know someone is always on your side.
Since childhood, I have experienced the desire to help people out of suffering and to see a more just world. While there are a number of different, valid ways of accomplishing those goals, it became apparent to me that becoming a therapist was both the best match for my strengths and what I quickly became the most passionate about.
