I have been a clinical social worker for over 40 years. My training has taken me from psychoanalytic training to the more recent trends of mindfulness. My passion has always been to help clients reach their optimum potential---to unlock the courage to resolve their conflicts. As I work with families that have been involved in high conflict divorce, I strive to bring balance as the families adjust to their new configuration. I believe the ideal situation for children of divorce is to have parents who encourage and continue to support positive, nurturing relationships with each other.

Although I treat a variety of psychological conditions, I have three main specialty areas. First, I specialize in treating children and adolescents with emotional and/or behavior problems such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, poor school performance, non compliant behavior, substance abuse, and emotional trauma from domestic violence or sexual abuse. I also specialize in working with children, families, and adults who are struggling with issues related to divorce and re-marriage. My third specialty area is treating relationship and marital problems.

I have been a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist for 34 years and helping heal families in my private practice for 24. I specialize in many areas such as child abuse, domestic violence, adoption and infertility related issues, grief, anxiety, depression, addiction, communication training and fair fighting techniques. Many clients come for short, solution focused therapy. I welcome everyone, despite gender, age, ethnicity, religion or sexual preference. My goal is to make the client feel welcome from the moment they arrive, until the time they leave with information that can immediately make a difference in their life.

I take a Solution Focused approach to guide clients to find solutions on life or personal issues they are struggling with. I work with the client at a pace they are comfortable with to resolve past, present, or future issues of concern. I utilize a variety of theoretical tools that best fit the client’s needs in session. I serve children, adolescents, adults, and elder populations.

Dr. Whitmer treats individuals, couples, and families. His doctoral training in clinical psychology has prepared him to treat many mental health disorders with various interventions. Dr. Whitmer is board certified as a Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator and a Forensic Vocational Expert. He is nationally certified as Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and is International Psychometric Evaluation Certified. Dr. Whitmer is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State.
