Life is full of emotions, sometimes its joy but sometimes its a sense of struggling and pain. Anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, and relationship/marital problems can all add to this sense of struggling. Especially, when we aren't well equipped to withstand it. Sometimes that struggle feels like this heavy cloud or mask we walk around with. Sometimes that struggle isolates us and causes us to become disconnected from ourselves or our loved ones. Playing tug of war with that struggle only makes it more draining.

Clients come to me looking for a therapist who gets marriage counseling, relationships, and trauma, and understands what it means to feel disconnected with relationships.
Are you having difficulty feeling connected in your relationship? Do you find yourself not communicating as well as you would like? You may be tired of feeling distant and disconnected, or constantly not feeling like your relationship is living up to your expectations. Maybe you don't even remember a time when it wasn't this way, but you know you are ready for some relief. You're ready to improve how you talk about feelings. You're ready to live a life where you are excited each day to come home to your partner. Most of all, your ready for intimacy to live up to what you want it to be.

My work is organized around the principle of post traumatic growth (see Tedeschi & Calhoun). Extensive research has demonstrated that those people who have been traumatized who get better change 3 things: relationship with self; relationship with other people; relationship with philosophy or religion. I help the wonderful people who work with me make those changes.

I have practiced psychotherapy for 25 years working with children and their families in schools, as well as with individuals, couples and families in private practice in Montpelier. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to support people when in transition, grieving, facing difficult life circumstances and grappling with the challenges of complex lives. The Therapeutic relationship is very important. So I focus on creating a supportive and safe environment that fosters a gentle inquiry into the areas of a person's life that are feeling stuck or blocked.

We all have had times when we find ourselves contemplating our understanding of life and whether our life has progressed on the path that we had envisioned. We may be experiencing states of grief, self-doubt, and worry about ourselves, our relationships, or the condition of the world in general. It can often feel frustrating and overwhelming to accept this experience and we can find ourselves asking, "What did I ever do to deserve this; why me and why now?" These are often the scenarios when we require support and a new perspective with which to consider life's challenges.

It is felt that within the therapeutic process both therapist and client ideally enter into an alliance to awaken their innate authenticity. My approach echoes the idea that when we engage our authentic or “deeper self” our highest potential may be awakened toward the creation of emotional balance. I believe this is integral to deeper and lasting recovery.

Depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and mental health crises may all manifest as means of focusing our attention on the need for change. At such times, these challenges present themselves as guideposts to opportunities for finding a different path.

Psychoanalysis and analytic psychotherapy are relationship-based treatment models. Reasons for seeking treatment, such as depression and anxiety, are as unique to individuals as are their relationships, thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. Finding out for one's self what constitutes a good therapeutic relationship develops over time along with insight and transformation. There is no replacement for personal experience where mental health is concerned. In the words of Wilfred Bion, "You are the most important person you are ever likely to meet. Therefore it is of no small importance that you get on well with this important person."

I believe that all people have the potential to be happy in their lives, regardless of what they have suffered. In therapy we develop self-awareness to clarify what is truly important to the person's life and whether they are living their life in accord with those values. Happiness also includes learning to have the right relation to negativity - to "compost" difficult emotions and situations to transform them into strength and resilence. I help the client use mindfulness/meditation practices to help encourage gratitude, which in turn dispels self-critical thinking that leads to depression and anxiety.

I help clients feel less anxious and more authentic in their relationships. I believe that many people experience struggle in their lives as a result of growing distant from their emotional compasses. I work with individual clients and couples to reconnect with these aspects of their experiences.

I focus on relationships, including the formative ones from childhood, current relationship dilemmas, and one's relationship to him/herself. I help clients identify their patterns which contribute to chronic and current life issues, including anxiety, depression and "stuckness", and to imagine new and more creative approaches to these problems. I emphasize the importance of emotional awareness to the goal of therapeutic change. With couples and families, I emphasize styles of communication and the cultivation of non-reactive listening.

Regardless of the form our individual struggles take in this world, I believe the solution is sourced from the same place: recognition of who we truly are, perfect expressions of love. My approach to therapy combines spiritual, scientific (quantum physics), and psychological truths. The fundamental premise of everything I convey to clients is that all of our apparent problems are in our minds and are very much within our power to change. I have recently found that I have a strength and love for teaching couples how to communicate authentically, lovingly, and constructively to work through misunderstandings.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
