I believe that treatment works best when it is tailored to the personality and individual needs of each client. Rather than relying on one theoretical perspective, I utilize a multi-modal approach, which consistently yields faster and longer-lasting results. My approach to treatment is grounded in psychodynamic and inter-personal theory, which I integrate with cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and solution-focused techniques. I have extensive experience dealing with a variety of psychological problems, including depression, anxiety, and trauma, as well as work-related, phase of life, marital, and family issues.

My training as a Marriage and Family Therapist is complemented by my undergraduate background in Religion, Philosophy, and Psychology.
Are you feeling isolated in your relationships? While romance may begin in an instant, long-term relationships are not easy to maintain alone. No matter where you are in your relationship, seeking guidance, opening the lines of communication, and establishing safety in emotional expression are the cornerstones of any lasting and fulfilling relationship. I aim to empower my clients to realize the strengths they already possess. I work with them, both individually and as couples and families, to utilize those unique strengths to develop a positive narrative for their lives and relationships.

To quote Anais Nin, " We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are". When you are in the middle of a problem it is hard to find solutions because there is a lack of prespective. Friends and family may have their own viewpoint that make it hard to be objective. Therapy provides a non-judgemental place to find new solutions when old behaviors don't work anymore. I have over 12 years experience successfully helping patients find alternative ways of veiwing things and making decisions about what they want in their lives.

Finding the key to happiness, I have always believed, comes from understanding yourself and coming to terms with who you are. I work very compassionately, without judgment, in a collaborative fashion, to help facilitate greater self- acceptance and equanimity. Whether we investigate your own family dynamics or process through Emotionally Focused Therapy, sessions will help uncover the underlying emotional beliefs that direct your own internal "story".

I believe that every person has a unique story to tell. Through creating a therapeutic environment that is welcoming, supportive, and safe, I hope to help clients discover their own individual paths to achieving their goals in both therapy and life overall. I understand the importance of acknowledging and celebrating each client’s multiple identities, including cultural, socioeconomic, gender, and sexual, as each influences the way one perceives the world and others.

Therefore, I focus on building a warm and safe therapeutic environment for introspection and self-discovery. I believe that we frequently we have the tools inside of us to heal our struggles and I seek to help you uncover those tools in therapeutic work. As a queer black woman, I understand it can be tough to find spaces to authentically express your true feelings, as well as get validation and support. I have experience holding space and processing the challenges that can arise from holding multiple marginalized identities.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
