Samantha spent the first half of her career working in healthcare, including 19 years in the field of reproductive medicine and made the decision to study marriage and family therapy as a compliment to her experience working with infertile couples.
Making the decision to see a therapist can be difficult. As a relationship therapist, Samantha dedicates herself to her clients with complete transparency and authenticity. She works with clients to find their inner strengths and resources to overcome the obstacles that may be keeping them ‘stuck’. Samantha works with clients to ‘zoom out’ and see the big picture: how the relationships in their life, including friends, intimate partners, family members and colleagues, impact the relationships they have with themself.

In my 25 years of practice as a clinical psychologist, I have worked with adults and adolescents, as well as couples and families treating issues of adjustment, self-doubt, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and marital and parenting difficulties. I believe that healthy relationships are at the center of our emotional well-being and that an empathic relationship between client and therapist is essential to any treatment relationship. I provide such an environment so my clients feel comfortable confronting and working through the challenging issues that bring them into therapy.

I also work using The Gottman Method with premarital and marital couples around the country, couples who are often at decision points, dealing with repetitive conflict, and seeking real tools to connect better.
As your therapist, I'm here to provide a warm and supportive space where you can talk freely without being judged. I won't just sit quietly – instead, I'll ask questions, offer suggestions, and reflect on what you share. Together, we'll work on dealing with the things that might be bothering you in your everyday life, whether that be challenges with relationships, work, or family. Our goal is to help you feel better, be true to who you are, and improve your relationships. And along the way, you'll get valuable skills to reduce stress and move your life forward.

Are you unhappy in your marriage, struggling as a parent or having difficulty with your new blended family? While everyone faces challenges in life, sometimes it can be too much to handle on your own. The stress and pressures of life can be overwhelming and can affect even the strongest individuals and families. The first step is finding a therapist who can understand your situation and has the experience to guide you to effectively resolve these problems. I work with couples, families and individuals to help them deal directly with their problems using a solution-based approach.

I am a licensed Marriage and Family therapist providing therapy for individuals, couples and families with emphasis on issues surrounding parenting, marital difficulties, and life challenges of adulthood that may relate to a breakdown in relationships. Knowing that life is a series of transitions, I help facilitate my clients' navigation through the imbalance that those transitions present. Some of these may include becoming a parent, mid-life adjustments and launching children.

My specialty is helping people manage all the things life throws your way. Childhood disappointments, a floundering marriage, a job you hate...or lost. Perhaps you have a sudden fear to drive a car, you feel generally unhappy or are dealing with the grief and loss of a loved one. All in all life can be hard. Transitions and relationships are what life is all about and I'm good at lending a hand.

As CT licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my approach is broadly humanistic, client-centered, systems oriented and trauma informed.
Does this sound familiar?: You've lost touch with the hopes and dreams that used to motivate and inspire you. An important relationship is in trouble: your relationship with your spouse, partner, child, or family is a repeated source of pain. You received feedback that you don’t seem yourself lately or that your behavior is alarming to those who care about you. The responsiveness of a therapist can help us acknowledge the deep urging and longings of our truer selves. Therapy can be a place where we chart a new course for our lives. “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” --Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Are you new to therapy, and looking for the most advanced neuroscience-based interventions available? Or, have you tried talk therapy and made progress, but ultimately felt that it wasn’t enough? Have you returned to using alcohol or other drugs despite your best efforts in recovery? What if there were a way of reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, trauma, and attention problems that could complement talk therapy? A new approach to treatment called Neurofeedback yields promising results of this nature.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
