My areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, trauma, life purpose, and marital and couples counseling.
Drawing from practices in innovation, positive psychology, and behavioral science, I’ve developed simple yet powerful techniques to help people change and grow. I’m the creator of the Stanford University class “Do It Anyway! Creating a life of passionate action” and the author of the book “Fail Fast, Fail Often: how losing can help you win”, an Oprah editor's choice selection. My work has been featured in the New York Times, NPR, and The Atlantic. As a therapist, I’m compassionate, warm and practical. I enjoy taking the time to understand and appreciate my clients, while empowering them with modern tools to promote rapid change.

I bring 50 years of experience with a broad range of traditional and non-traditional methods to the process of helping people maximize their strengths, overcome recurrent problems, and transform their challenges into opportunities for growth. I’m active, practical, and combine logic and intuition in my approach to people. Assisting individuals and couples to find a balance between intimacy and autonomy and to recognize their relationship patterns and change those they want to change is one of my specialties. Decreasing anxiety and depression and increasing enjoyment of life is another.

Is your kiddo lacking confidence, overwhelmed by their emotions, yet you know deep inside there is a magical human just waiting to be discovered? I work with children who are highly intellectual, empathic, and feeling beings who oftentimes have been targeted by schools, peers, and teachers as being the "problem." The truth is they are not the problem and you know this, but yet their everyday functioning is being hindered. Getting to school or having play dates often seems like more of a challenge for you than the other families you know.

I am dedicated to working with people who want to get at the roots of their emotional pain and distress. My fundamental approach to treatment is relational. Therapy is a process where we will develop an alliance in which your emotional and developmental needs are made a priority. Over time, an internalized healing space forms where you can recover access to parts of your true self. Speaking freely without unnecessary self-censorship may be simple, but it is not easy. I encourage you to try it.

Your past has left you living a life two sizes too small. You want to feel belonging and aliveness. But every time you move toward what calls to you, anxiety, shame, and self-doubt tell you that you can't have or deserve good things. You face a choice between the voices of past conditioning and the voice of your true self, who knows nothing is or has ever been wrong with you. The true self voice may be quieter. But it is here, calling you home. It is why you are on this site, finding support to release old ways of being and to live from your most whole, loving self.

My approach is direct, supportive and caring. I believe that effective psychotherapy is based upon mutual curiosity and genuineness in discovering how to meet life’s challenges - including family issues, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. The path through these difficulties includes facing them with humor, gentleness and bravery. The fruition of this exploration is a greater awareness of self and an appreciation of others.

The cycles of overwhelm, internalized aggression, and self-abandonment are not solitary experiences - they happen as complex responses to trauma, stress, depression, grief, and disconnect. Whether you are struggling with addiction, life transitions, or any challenging pattern, the impulse to escape the present moment can influence a painful cycle of suffering. In the process of reclaiming the self, we cannot approach healing on a solely cognitive level. Every aspect of the collective self holds the wounds and wisdom that, if honored in mutual regard, can guide an individual towards profound growth.

I work with individuals and couples offering existential therapy to help you to live more fully and find new ways to face your predicaments, paradoxes and conflicts. Together we can explore your life and relationships to discover ways in which you can live more authentically, in alignment with your values. I trained and worked in England before moving to Boulder in 2010. I have over 20 years experience as a therapist; I bring that with me as I meet each new individual or couple. I will help you describe, clarify and unravel your relationship to the world, your self and other people. We do not have to start with your childhood.

I offer in-person and/or on-line psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy. My approach aims to resolve longstanding patterns that keep clients from embodying their potential, preventing their ability to meet novelty flexibly, to be in relationships, to parent effectively, or to look creatively towards a future. Sometimes our psychological, spiritual, physiologic, relational and creative resources are depleted or undeveloped. My intention is to help access these resources, whether my clients are looking for supportive psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, or wanting to take a deeper look inside with psychoanalysis.

When you imagine a time when you felt at your best, what comes to mind for you? Perhaps, a time when you stood up for something important to you? Or, a time when you felt synchrony between your mind, your body, and your heart? Maybe you've experienced lots of moments when you felt like you could engage with the world in a meaningful way, and during that time you - just for a moment - lost track of the 'stuff' you usually carry along with you? Changes are, these experiences in your life are not entirely due to chance or circumstance... but rather, due to your mindset, your habits, and your relationships.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
