I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety Self Esteem, women issues, marital and premarital, life transitions, spirituality,.
Going through life's journey is like riding a roller coaster full of ups, downs, twists, and turns. On a roller coaster, you often have someone sitting next to you regardless of if you know the person. Think of life the same way. It is challenging and shouldn't be done alone. My passion is to help clients go through life transitions and challenges with more ease by identifying and rediscovering their strengths to develop a healthy lifestyle.

Too often psychotherapy focuses on causality, pathology and cures. However, rather than being "sick" or 'broken", often we are just lost inside ourselves or relationships. Everyone is a unique person with their own story, experience and perspective. The goal of therapy is to achieve a deeper awareness of where we are, to discover internal meaning for our many experiences, and to experience a life worth living. While working towards that awareness, I also feel it important to teach individuals, couples and families the skills needed to cope with the pain and day to day stressors that bring them into therapy.

I prep individuals for marriage counseling when both partners are not ready to meet with a couples therapist and talk about what changes are needed.
Richard trained at Harvard Medical School in Narrative Medicine and M.I.T. Sloan School of Management in Neuroscience for Business. His experience as a producer’s assistant to Academy Award and Emmy Award winners (working on Billion $ revenue teams) has allowed him to understand the demands of success while balancing creativity, career, family, and relationship goals. He works with creatives, actors, writers, producers, Alphabet engineers, tech start-up docs, students, and teachers. Using CBT and Interpersonal Neurobiological approaches, he meets patients where they most need him to overcome obstacles and achieve optimum health.

I specialize in marital, grief, anxiety, depression, identity, crisis intervention and occupational issues.
I love doing therapy and have been in private practice over 30 years around the Bay Area. I work mostly with adolescents, adults, couples and families. Helping people take the reins of their lives, speak up, and break out of limiting frameworks is tremendously fulfilling. I tell clients, "my job is to work myself out of a job" by teaching them necessary tools that will serve them after graduating from therapy.

As a California and Arizona Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, I am privileged to work with a variety of highly intelligent and uniquely talented people, who, due to a lifetime of psychological, spiritual and philosophical pain are often the last to be aware of their authenticity as their true value.
Sup? Our first understanding of ourselves comes from the first people we know. From there, the other relationships we participate in tend to reflect those aspects of ourselves previously learned. I specialize in successfully treating the presenting symptoms of childhood trauma. Including and often self-limiting: substance abuse, social and intrapersonal anxieties, clinical, situational and abandonment depression, and the often self-sabotaging and socially unacceptable yet still ubiquitous unresolved rage.

Whether it is restoring trust and harmony in relationships, successfully moving past addictive cycles, finding a deeper sense of purpose and satisfaction in life, working through trauma, or recovering from depression, there is support and hope for you. I use methodologies rooted in science and validated by research. I believe that it is through authentic connection to others that we grow in self awareness and emotional health.

Having a safe and supportive space where one can talk openly, is so very important. Feeling understood and listened to promotes growth and change. I am warm and understanding as well as insightful and objective, bringing experience and honesty to my work. Together we will talk about what’s going on now, past events and relationships, and how they might be affecting you. I will work to develop a trusting, supportive relationship to more clearly understand what is troubling you. My clients have enjoyed success in overcoming anxiety and depression, connecting with others, defining and attaining goals, and increasing self-esteem.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
