I have been a professor of marriage and family therapy at Pepperdine, a practicum instructor in CSUSB's school counseling program, and clinical training director at USC.
All too often struggles deplete our energy and leave us feeling down on ourselves. Through rigorous conversation and a highly supportive relationship, I help people gain the clarity and confidence needed to produce desired change. I have extensive training in postmodern therapies, which examine how dominant cultural discourses can have oppressive effects on our lives, identities, and relationships. Prior to working in private practice, I was part of UCLA's network, where I brought social justice aims to integrative models of mental health. I have many years of experience working with couples, families, youth, and adults.

I incorporate different types of treatment and work from an inclusive perspective of each client's own experience. I meet with clients in my office, offer walking sessions in the park and sessions via Zoom.

We are all seeking peace in one form or another: in our relationships, with ourselves, or in our life choices. Past experiences, trauma, grief & loss, and current conflict or illness can make it hard to feel who you really are and what you want. I am here to listen & reflect your truth, and to help you find and create a life that matters to you. Through empathic conversations, enlivening and reflective exercises, and mindful awareness of yourself and your body, we help you cultivate a felt sense of ease and safety that isn’t just intellectual, so you can live your most awake, consciously-chosen life and relationships.

I look forward to working with people interested in examining their past, present and future in hopes of finding greater meaning in, and understating of, all three of those aspects of their lives. Therapy can be scary, and is not without its risks, but I will provide a safe and non-judgmental container for the process. My passion is helping people interested in the examined life, and I bring much experience, both clinical and life experience, to this shared journey ahead.

Through conversation and collaboration, I aim to help clients explore new possibilities on how they might understand and contend with the issues they bring to therapy. My approach is non-pathologizing, in other words, I see my clients as more than and separate from the problems they encounter—I see them as worthy, knowledgeable, and dignified people desiring a better way. I work with individuals, couples, and families who are seeking consultation on a variety of issues, including anxiety, grief, loss, relational concerns, work-related stress, and life transitions.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
