“We are all on a journey of some sort, whether it is one of healing, new beginnings, pleasure, or life transition. Sometimes we encounter storms and obstacles that shake us and may make us feel as if we are lost or maybe incapable of overcoming the storm.” These storms may be recognized as anxiety, depression, loss of a loved one, job or home. Creating therapeutic trust and emotional safety are two of my greatest strengths as a therapist. I will work with you to create an environment in which you can discover your own truth and authentic self, and increase your capacity to make healthy life choices and find fulfilling relationships.

Struggles are in the “I” of the beholder. Based on this literal perception, we often face our struggles as a problem only “I” can solve and forget that we are communal by nature. This can lead to feelings of emotional isolation where we feel no one truly understands what we are going through. Therapy is the contradiction to these feelings as it focuses on collaboration based on honesty, integrity, and respect. As your therapist, I will meet you where you are and help you toward the goals you desire to achieve.

Perhaps you or a loved one are experiencing deep grief, longing, disconnection, stress, anxiety, isolation or a sense of being misunderstood by others...or even yourself. Relationships, life transitions, the tragic death of those we love as well as other life experiences often lead us to a degree of feeling as though we have lost our footing. In these moments, we can feel lost and unable to find the support and clarity we need to find stability. This impacts our relationships with ourselves, our sense of belonging with others as well as our ability to feel connected, present and authentic in our daily lives.

Therapy is for anybody that has desire to change or grow. It is not always easy to identify our specific issues, needs, and goals. However, most can identify when something just isn't working right. We can work together to uncover the ins and outs of your problems, then create a plan to address them. Therapy is not about making life’s challenges disappear. It is about growing and becoming better equipped to handle these challenges. Depression, anxiety, relationship problems, addiction, and so on, are all difficult but common human experiences. Life can be difficult, but you don't have to face it alone.

I have experience with clients ranging from adolescence to the elderly, families and couples. My specialization is working with serious mental illness and substance abuse. I rely on compassion, empathy, and non judgment to respectfully approach complex situations. I understand that life has ebbs and flows. It can be difficult to traverse, especially when one feels alone, overwhelmed, hopeless, helpless, misunderstood, powerless, ashamed, unheard, victimized, confused, invisible, etc.

I believe my life purpose is to “bring light” to those in dark spaces. I know what it is like to be on the edge- in a dark space- and how difficult it may feel to “climb out of the cave”. I genuinely believe every person can lead a life worth living regardless of their circumstances and the pain they have experienced. As a therapist, it is my hope & desire to bring light to all my clients and guide them to a place where they find their own light. I have had the pleasure of working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, self-esteem/self-worth issues and destructive behaviors such as self-harm.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
