Working through my own painful losses and life experiences (including marriage, divorce, single parenting, step-parenting, grandparenting, developing a chronic medical condition, grief, etc.
You may be feeling stuck, discouraged, angry or depressed about your life or relationships. Maybe there's a medical condition with emotional effects on you or others. Your family life or parenting situation may be difficult. Maybe you're having trouble with co-workers or siblings. Or you may have just lost your way and don't know where you are going or how to get there ... wherever "there" might be. Whether you believe we choose our own circumstances, that there is a "master plan," or that sometimes SHTUFF happens, you still have reactions, feelings, and decisions to make about "what next?" I can help.

I grew up in the state of Michigan and moved to California in the 60s. I decided to become a therapist in my 20's and received my B.A. in Psychology. However, I was single, working in the airline industry, and was enjoying the travel and postings in other countries. I lived and worked in Japan for 2 years and in Singapore for 2 years. I finally decided to pursue my lifelong interest and obtained my Masters's degree in Clinical Psychology and my license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California.

I do my best to keep an open mind and to create an environment that is conducive to fostering open communication and trust. I respect and value the thoughts and feelings of my client's. I believe that therapy is, ultimately, about freedom and that healing occurs through the process of self-exploration, understanding, finding meaning and deepening one's insight. I tend to work directly and dynamically, rather than passively; I do a lot of listening and I am also active in the therapeutic role.

Since the start of the pandemic, so many of us have come to crossroads in our lives. When in isolation we have been forced to look closely at the relationships we value, the activities we enjoy, and what we wish to change. In the age of social media, the culture of comparison has dominated our inner psyches and altered our abilities to obtain lasting happiness. In our work together, I want to provide you with a warm, thoughtful, socioculturally-attuned, and collaborative environment. Here, we can explore your individual needs, the belief systems you hold, and your hopes for the future.

Distressing symptoms, whether they be depression, anxiety, a sense of meaninglessness, addictions, or behavior problems can be painful and debilitating. As your therapist, I consider it my job to help you understand and utilize such symptoms as opportunities for growth. With the help of effective therapy, in fact, periods of stagnation and despair can serve as catalysts that allow us to discover previously unknown levels of happiness, prosperity, and inner peace. As your symptoms diminish, together we will work towards expanding your capacity for work, love, and creativity. I offer a free initial consultation period for all new patients.

My practice specializes in COUPLES as well as individuals who want to grow together and let go of old patterns that aren’t serving them anymore. Your therapy has to feel like a 'good fit', so I use my curiosity and experience to help us discover what feels right. People can confront the more difficult parts of themselves in a safe environment. I provide this in our sessions together, bringing warmth, respect and humor to the relationship. Aside from couples, my practice focuses on recovery, codependency, love/sex addiction and avoidance, chronic pain and illness, relationship issues, NPD abuse healing, and anxiety/depression.

Sometimes it's good to know a few things about your potential therapist. This might be helpful. I am: Queer. A single mother. Serbian. Ask if you would like to know anything else. Over the last few years, I've noticed a big shift in the mental health world. Clients are seeking out their wildness, yearning for desire, playfulness, meaning. They are connecting with elements of their identities that have been denied. They are choosing themselves above the comfort of others. This is exciting to me. The therapy room can be a place to notice, practice, and fortify this work.

Exploring your life in partnership with a dedicated therapist can be a remarkable gift to yourself. I can help you gain insight into unhelpful patterns and difficulties in your life, and support you in realizing your hopes and goals. I view symptoms not merely as problems that need to be “fixed”; instead I seek to help you uncover their deeper causes. Problems then become opportunities for renewal and positive change. I believe a trusting therapeutic relationship is at the foundation of a successful therapeutic outcome. My goal is to provide a safe and collaborative environment in which lasting change and healing become possible.

You are fed up with repeating patterns that feel self-destructive. You are tired of being so reactive to the same triggers. You are ready for change, for relationships that fill your cup, and for a life that is purposeful and passionate. And you are probably totally overwhelmed right now. I get it. Wading through pages of therapist bios when you're already stressed, sad, and/or confused can be kind of the worst thing ever. But I'm here to help! I support clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, relationship issues, low self-esteem, stress and lack of clarity that big life transitions can kick up.

We all have the potential to create the lives and relationships we want, even in the most challenging of situations. Grappling with the normal questions and challenges of being human can, at times become overwhelming. I work with clients to tap into the inner and outer resources that may have been unrecognized or perhaps forgotten, and to utilize these resources and skills to transform difficulty and pain into ease and wellbeing. You don't have to stay stuck in habitual patterns that don't serve you. Through thoughtful exploration and practice you can build a life of greater freedom and possibility.

Asking someone for help is one of the most powerful decisions you can make, so I consider it a privilege to guide you along this path of self-discovery. I work with clients in a supportive, compassionate, and nurturing way; helping them identify strengths and define goals through a process of active listening, deep empathy, non-judgment and acceptance. I work in an eclectic yet integrative manner utilizing many different modalities depending upon the client's needs and what they would most benefit from. I draw from neuroscience, research, and best clinical practices to carefully determine the right approach for each client.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
