My aim is to help couples who are considering marriage or are newly married in forging life-long bonds that can withstand the test of time.
New couples are often reluctant to seek help. Be it stigma surrounding couple's therapy, or feeling like they have not been together "long enough," couples usually wait until resentment and unhappiness have grown to distressing levels before reaching out for help. According to relationship expert Dr. John Gottman, couples often endure an average of six years of unhappiness before seeking help. Why let years of resentment build up when you can spend that time strengthening your bond and finding new ways to overcome and adapt to life's inevitable conflicts?

Individual, couples, pre-marital, and marital counseling all share one thing: a safe place to share, talk, question, and express your feelings and concerns within the context of your life and all of your relationships.
Therapy is a place for you to feel known and understood. It is also a place for you to overcome painful experiences. Together, we can work to gain a better understanding of YOURSELF and your relationships. We build on your strengths so you can apply them toward healing, growth, and change. If you are motivated to learn about yourself and discover new behaviors and new thought patterns, we will work well together. We each deserve to know what it feels like to be supported and that is what I am offering you. Please visit my website for more details about my practice. I offer teletherapy and in-person sessions.

We are all on an individual journey desiring balance, joy, and happiness, possessing a strong hunger for hope. If we can simply master how to just be, we may have an invaluable opportunity to connect with inner peace and positivity.

Often it is a life crisis that brings people to therapy; whether it is internal or external. Making the connection of trust and support with the therapist is the first step to the work. I believe in the power of therapy to change patterns that interfere with relationships and satisfaction in life. Over time I have developed great confidence in the benefit of exploring family of origin relationships and how they play out in life. Understanding these patterns is often crucial to change and improvement in anxiety and depression.

Deciding to pursue therapy can be a daunting task, and I work with many clients who have mixed feelings about being in counseling. For some, coming to counseling is a welcomed relief and having a space that is all your own can bring comfort. Others find that it feels scary and overwhelming to seek help, and they may not know where to begin. Whatever your feelings about therapy may be and at whatever point you may be in your process, I’m here to help.

Are you navigating a relationship where anxiety speaks louder than love and belonging? I help individuals, couples, partners, and families within marginalized identities/communities/relational styles understand, accept, and ease their relational insecurities. I welcome the discussion of challenging issues and topics related to infidelity, jealousy, sex and kink, grief and loss, and spiritual trauma, especially if those issues intersect with LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC identities and/or non-traditional relational dynamics including polyamory, non-monogamy, single parent, and blended families.

In meeting individuals and families, my focus is to gain insight into the complex history of each person. After building a therapeutic relationship, I assess what modality would align with their specific needs. I like to set realistic and attainable goals with each client that I work with. Much of my past and current clientele has consisted of teens and college aged students working through transitions. I gather much of my experience from working as a recruiter for more than 15 years.

Disturbing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, disorientation, and explosive anger may be signs that important, but unseen, parts of ourselves need attention. I use a depth psychological approach to help clients develop greater awareness of who they are and what they need, so that they can use their symptoms as pathways to a more meaningful relationship with themselves and the world around them.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
