I have experience working with clients who suffer from anxiety, depression, personality disorders, trauma-related issues, family issues, marital/couples therapy, and working with veterans.
Do ever feel like no matter how hard you try, you cannot reach your goals? Do you find it difficult to manage daily stressors, or do mental health issues interfere with your plans? Sometimes it feels like no matter how hard we try, we cannot overcome our problems on our own. I am a mental health provider who can help you overcome those obstacles. I have a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Susan M. Pittman, MSW, LCSW, therapist at Northside Psychotherapeutics. Empowering people to make meaningful change in their lives has always been my passion. I offer a wide range of clinical skills developed over the past 30 years in the social services field working with teens, adults, and seniors. I have 13 years practicing as a licensed therapist. While I enjoy using a variety of therapy models and approaches, I find that first and foremost people simply need someone to listen, and help them alleviate their emotional distress. Our thoughts, fears, anxieties, and unfulfilled expectations can be obstacles to living the life we want to have and experience authentically. The therapeutic process supports and assists us in identifying, and better understanding all parts of our authentic selves. I listen and hold space for your individual situation. To hear how you’re feeling and understand the challenges that are impacting you daily. My intention is that we work together to provide a safe and supportive atmosphere where you can explore issues that may be difficult to talk about at sufficient length elsewhere while reaching healthy outcomes.

Michelle creates a safe space for clients to share their life’s story, bringing their full selves, in order to grow more into their own personal sense of wellness. Being fully known and heard is in itself a path to healing. Michelle walks with the client as they become aware of ways their thoughts and beliefs about past experiences, behaviors, and relationships are affecting their present.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
