My goal at New Directions, a Clinical Psychology practice, is to assist individuals, couples, families and other groups. Issues may result from many situations, including the challenges of marriage, parenting, friendships, the workplace and others. Or, the challenge may be from being alone. The common thread for many individuals is a wish for "new directions" in life. I make every effort to work towards finding solutions. As a Clinical Psychologist in practice for over 40 years, my belief is that the decision made by individuals to seek psychological treatment is an important step in moving forward towards new directions in life.

I specialize in couples/marriage counseling, sex therapy, trauma, career counseling, motivational therapy, life coaching, family therapy, child/teen counseling.
Life should be about happiness! So often we are a product of our environment while being held captive by society's standards, taboos, and the expectations of those around us. It is amazing to learn how quickly we've adopted the beliefs and perspectives of those around us living by their rules and ideas of our life. When we actually take a moment in time to explore, evaluate, and change those - we can begin living our lives for ourselves. Those changes can make an incredible impact on changing your life for the better. It's never too late!

In today's culture, we are often so focused on dealing with the many stressors of everyday life and on taking care of others, we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, depressed, anxious and depleted. Making an appointment for therapy is the first step towards taking care of yourself and feeling better. In my experience, lasting change can begin to take place as you share with a therapist who will listen compassionately, join with you to understand your experience, and guide you to find and use the tools to make postive changes and create the life you want.

"Fear lives in the head. And courage lives in the heart. The job is to get from one to the other" - Louis Penny. It is inevitable that we will be wounded during the journey of life. Many of those wounds generally heal on their own. However some wounds cut deeper. They are unable to heal themselves and leave scars causing broken relationships, anxiety, addiction, insecurity, fear, and pain. Facing these wounds can be frightening and overwhelming, especially when facing them alone. Together we find the courage and strength to face and heal these wounds.

Life can be like a ship out at sea. It can be a beautiful and peaceful experience, but it can also be overwhelming, scary, and filled with unknowns. Maybe you’re feeling lost or in the middle of a storm, and need some help finding your way. I want to be the person to help you. I once was told that as the client, you are the captain, and as the counselor, I am the navigator; I have the tools and maps that can help you and guide you but you make the decisions about where we go and what we focus on in the counseling space.

Depression, anxiety, relationship conflicts, loneliness, life changes, indecision, performance issues, impulsivity . . . we all struggle with something; it is part of the human condition. And at times, it is more than we can manage on our own. Let's collaborate on a mission to understand what is troubling you and identify the steps you may take toward realizing the life you envision. As your therapist, I will listen, but also will actively participate in a conversation about you and what matters most to you. Acceptance and empathy, along with the encouragement and guidance to grow, are the cornerstones of my practice.

I feel privileged to walk beside clients as they deal with struggles such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, addiction, OCD, relationship challenges, grief and loss, spirituality, and more. Working with my clients has taught me that recovery involves recognizing and utilizing one's strengths to make healthy changes and decisions in their lives. This is why I see my role as a counselor is to support and empower my clients as they identify and work towards their recovery goals.

Exhausted, sad, angry or overwhelmed? When in the throes of negative feelings, it’s often easy to forget that they serve as signposts for boundary violations or unmet needs. Just as hunger, cold and other uncomfortable sensations shift to a sense of comfort or satisfaction when the need is met, emotional distress likewise transitions to a sense of fullness, wholeness or connectedness whenever the needs which underlie it are met.

I am a strong believer in therapy being a collaborative, healing, and restorative experience. As Pema Chödrön once said, “Let difficulty transform you. And it will. In my experience, we just need help in learning how to not run away.” But that’s easier said than done – what are the steps to getting to a better place? Where do you even start? You are not alone in this journey. I take great pride in building a therapeutic connection and a safe space for you to be your genuine self so that you may find that resiliency within.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
