I am a psychotherapist specializing in growth-oriented counseling with adults & couples. My clients typically work to increase emotional awareness of their present choices or patterns which lead to various forms of distress. This pain often causes significant disruption in their social, work, physical lives or intimate relationships. Early childhood experiences influence how we all experience our lives today. Insights and associations during talk therapy often bring previously unseen options to light that lead to healthier choices and decreased stress and pain. These sessions take place weekly over the course of many months or more to provide the foundation of lasting growth.

Therapy can feel broad and overwhelming. To simplify our approach, we'll seek acceptance and control of adversities that seem to dictate your life. Whatever stressors weigh on you, we'll troubleshoot what hasn't been working and process new tools to put in place. It is my responsibility to adapt to your preferences and ways of learning. I'll provide a space for you that can range from open discussion and exploration, to structured activities and weekly goals. Additionally, these steps are flexible and can be done in a matter of time that fits what you hope to achieve. All possible with individual, couples, and/or family therapy.

Feeling stuck? Wishing for change? Fear of the future? We go through struggles that test our ability to find joy and experience pleasure. It is often our relationships with friends, family and especially our partners that take the brunt of these taxing times. It is common that our intimate relationships get tagged as the reason for our hurt and pain or are the most negatively impacted. Blame can drive a wedge and damage intimacy. Ironically, it is within our intimate relationships that we find the majority of our most meaningful experiences. Experiences that result in feeling that joy and pleasure we so desperately desire.

Psychotherapy is at its best when a client and therapist work as a collaborative team. Together with my clients, I work to create an environment that facilitates an understanding not only of their struggles, but also of their strengths as they move toward their goals. My approach is both direct and open, and compassionate and flexible. I have an appreciation of the whole person in the context of their relationships, and bring these ideas to my work. Each client is unique and I strive to provide a therapy experience that is designed for the unique qualities and situation that each person brings.

Emotions can really suck and as we age we grow to have difficulty expressing and feeling them. An "affect phobia." In other words, we develop difficulty interacting, expressing, and feeling our emotions. This presents in a number of different methods; laughing when uncomfortable, lack of eye contact, verbal outbursts, restlessness, and many other ways. I help patients recognize the means used to relate to themselves and others to experience feelings and resolve unconscious conflicts. The goal being an elimination of depression, anxiety, and trauma responses in the shortest time possible.

Psychotherapy is a process of slowing down and working together to understand what has been troubling you. The type of therapy I practice is grounded in making sense of how past relationships, experiences, and identities are impacting you in the here and now. The patient-therapist relationship becomes our primary source for understanding your patterns in other relationships and I strive to create a therapy relationship that fosters curiosity, vulnerability, and growth.

Understanding ourselves allows us to make choices that otherwise might be out of our reach. Acknowledging how we feel opens the way to understanding. When we repress our feelings we can shut down not only how we experience ourselves but how we connect to others. Ignoring our feelings often leads to depression and anxiety and interferes with our ability to know ourselves and trust ourselves. We may feel at times that others are in control and that we are helpless. We are the ones responsible for the choices we make and recognizing this is empowering and builds self-esteem.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
