As someone born in America as part of a tight-knit Indian family who is in an interfaith marriage, I am particularly sensitive to the impact clients' families, cultures, and/or religions have on shaping their beliefs and informing their choices.
Thanks for taking a moment to find out more about my services! I enjoy working with individuals (including adolescents) and couples and specialize in Premarital, Interfaith, Multicultural, and Infertility work. I strive to create a safe space for my clients to share, be heard and witnessed, explore, heal, and grow. My style of working with clients is relational, holistic, collaborative, and creative. I deeply believe in a client-centered and strengths-based approach. My counseling technique is a combination of depth oriented, family systems, and experiential therapies (i.e., art/play therapy, mindfulness) with the goals of insight, healing, and behavior change.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families of all possible configurations. If you are seeking therapy for your child, I will also work with you to assist you in parenting your child. I listen for the voices of those who feel unheard in a variety of interpersonal contexts; those who may have experienced difficult or abusive relationships with a primary attachment figure (not necessarily a parent), or who have experienced the loss of a parent, and who may struggle with anger, shame, a sense of invisibility...or maybe feelings they cannot yet describe.

Do you sometimes find yourself in uncomfortable or painful interactions with others? Do you find yourself conflicted about decisions? Perhaps your difficulties are intense and active, infused with a sense of dread or anger. Or maybe it might be more like a deadness in the form of numbing or repetitive patterns from which you wish to awaken and/or relax into a life of homeostasis.

I am a University of Pennsylvania trained, millennial, Indian-American, psychotherapist who utilizes emotion-focused methods to help you generate a stronger sense of self. My main goals in therapy are to help you feel less alone with your emotions and to help you feel more understood in your experience as a POC in the United States. As a child of immigrants, I can relate to the unique challenge of straddling two very different cultures and trying to fit in with both. Oftentimes, I will draw from my personal experience of navigating similar cultural, generational, and racial clashes to better support you.

I am a bi-racial, bi-cultural psychotherapist who has extensive experience working with multiple marginalized states of otherness, including pansexual and gender non-conforming identities. I work psychodynamically, but more specifically from a trauma-based, attachment/ object relations modality. Within my training, I also integrate anti-racist, critical and feminist theories, as well as behavioral strategies. I am heavily invested in the current socio/political paradigm and social media, largely because I see how the internet can serve to amplify avoidance strategies and create psychological ill health.

It can start with a question. Why do I feel so...? How do I stop doing...? Do I have to settle for...? For many of us there may come a time when we ask ourselves do I need help? Asking for help is, arguably, the most difficult thing for people to do and maybe you're thinking about taking that step. There are many reasons why someone would seek therapy. If you are an individual or a couple and that journey has led you here, welcome.

Let’s face it, change happens, and it happens fast. Sometimes we aren't equipped to handle change. And it’s that that we are not up for the challenge, but that challenges emerge when a person attempts to make sense out of change using skills that worked in the past and are no longer meeting their current need. In my role, I take a warm, directive stance to not only challenge, but also empower individuals to reimagine their role as the expert on their life, by creating new alternative perspectives and establishing mastery of new tools and skillset to increase their quality of life.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
