I believe psychotherapy is a process that helps a person connect deeply with her/himself. By becoming more aware, through the therapeutic relationship, a person comes to understand the basis of his/her conflicts and developmental challenges, which can be manifested by symptoms of depression, anxiety or other distress. I use an interactive approach that focuses on peoples' strengths as well as exploring where they feel stuck. A goal is to help people see themselves realistically, and then to increase their ability to manage thoughts and feelings constructively, enhancing their relationships and their sense of purpose and well-being in the world.
I draw from multiple theory bases, including psychoanalysis, family systems, and cognitive-behavioral, with particular interest in the interface between neuroscience and psychology. Each theory offers a lens for understanding the mind, with concepts that are useful under different circumstances. The combination, therefore, allows for flexibility and creativity in the work.
Bilingual in Spanish with bicultural experience, I also am a graduate of the advanced psychotherapy training program through the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, and I am on the voluntary clinical faculty of the GWU Hospital's Dept.of Psychiatry, specializing in couple and family therapy.
