Welcome, I'm Evelyn Dougherty and I've been a practicing therapist for over 20 years. My short term work is individual and couples counseling my longer term therapy is group and couples group.

I love helping clients who feel stuck with anxiety, depression, or trauma become “unstuck.” In my therapy space, I strive to create a supportive environment for people to explore their emotions – and the experiences that shaped those emotions. With individuals, couples, and families, I work collaboratively to understand how previous dynamics, especially with families of origin, contribute to their current thoughts and coping skills. When clients understand how their past relationships influence their current selves, they are better able to build new futures, with greater self-acceptance, growth, new skills, and overall happiness.

I approach each client with the assumption that you are coming to me with an intention to alleviate discontentment or suffering. I see my job as helping you articulate your reasons for seeking therapy, to understand the source of your issues, and to find strategies that bring relief. My style is interactive, with an emphasis on caring and supportive feedback. I expect the client to establish the agenda for each session, trusting that the client knows best what needs to be addressed in any given session. I emphasize psychoeducation about the role of, and differences between, thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

I have worked in a variety of settings (mental health clinics, adolescent and family agencies, a college counseling center, private practice) and engaged in many different kinds of clinical training (social work, family therapy, psychoanalysis). These experiences, extensive travel, and my own pursuit of cross cultural interests have raised a number of recurring questions about human motivation. One central question has to do with what helps people overcome repetitive patterns of behavior that interfere with their having fulfilling lives. I work with each client as a unique entity, adjusting my approach to the particular needs of the person.

I bring a warm and interactive style to my psychotherapeutic practice, which can best be described as "eclectic," as I believe that not one type of therapy is right for everyone. Pulling from psychodynamic (insight-oriented) psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness/meditation, and somatics (the integration of body/mind/spirit), I will tailor my practice to your individual needs depending on the particular issues you would like to address in therapy.

Dr. Kirsten Snyder combines her doctoral level training in clinical psychology with her training in energy medicine to provide a holistic healing experience of the mind, body and spirit for her clients. Kirsten has over 15 years of experience providing psyotherapy to older adolescents and adults.
