I believe that healing can occur within the context of a trusted relationship. I work with adults and families to help people better understand the things that are getting in the way of living a full, productive, and satisfying life. That could be a child’s struggle with emotional regulation, a parent’s difficulty setting limits or understanding their child’s behavior, an adult who struggles to develop and sustain intimate relationships, or a teenager who feels overwhelmed by all that is on their plate.

In practice for over 40 years, I have a great deal of experience with children, adolescents and adults. Area of specialization working with perpetrators of and family members impacted by domestic violence. Anxiety and life adjustments are also an area of specialty. Retired as high school social worker, I've worked with hundreds of adolescents. It is my belief that emotional energy is finite and that helping you in achieving balance can be so very helpful in finding solutions to emotional distress. Jazz trumpet is my avocation and I work to pass along the lessons I have learned relating to persistence and mindfulness.

Relationships in love, family and work shape so much of how we feel. I help people know themselves and what they bring (good and bad) to their relationships, and help build the skills need to form rewarding connections and sort out relationship breakdowns and chronic problems. In addition, I help those who have had tried therapy or medication in the past but have not been helped. I work with individuals and couples by listening carefully and responding thoughtfully, genuinely and respectfully to create positive outcomes and to meet important needs.

Susan Millner uses a variety of evidence-based practices with a specialty in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Susan received advanced training in ACT in 2010 and immediately connected with it on both a personal and professional level. Since then, she has presented at a number of conferences focusing on ACT and provided supervision/consultation to therapists looking to learn the model. In addition to ACT, Susan is trauma sensitive and utilizes and integrative approach that includes CBT, mindfulness, family systems, and a variety of other professional techniques.

Having sexual trauma can turn your world upside down. It can be very hard to build relationships, and trusting others becomes that much harder. If there is sexual trauma as a child then the trust and innocence are lost early. If it is as an adult then the meaning and idea of what you knew trust to be are now shifted. Being in a relationship with sexual trauma history can be a rollercoaster ride filled with unknown twists and turns. I know that the needs and changes may be different for those individuals and their partners. My goal is to work together with my clients to relieve the pressure of the reprogrammed trauma brain.

Over 20 years of extensive experience with youth and adult clients in a variety of settings (schools, community agencies, and private practice) allows me to successfully help you with anxiety, mood, trauma, behavior, developmental concerns, adjustment, and family conflict. I have special skill working with dual diagnosis. I am positive, approachable, and build strong relationships with each client to increase positive treatment outcomes. I meet clients where they are and work with them at their own pace. My collaborative approach helps clients explore their own strengths, set goals, and take practical action towards these goals.

My passion is in working with individuals coping with physical health complaints, changes in ability (i.e. due to aging or health), and significant loss (i.e. loved ones, pets, etc). Beyond that, I have experience working with individuals of all ages struggling with depression, anxiety, oppositional behaviors, trauma, and personality disorders. My ideal client is someone (or someones) who is struggling but motivated to discuss these struggles and try new things both inside and outside of therapy.
