I came to Humboldt County in 2001, after completing my psychology degree in Europe and my master's degree in psychotherapy in Syracuse, New York. I have practiced psychotherapy for the last 30 years, and I am familiar with a wide range of issues, situations and diagnosis. Although, I enjoy specific theoretical and practical approaches and models of therapy like CBT, SFBT for treating anxiety, trauma impact and depression symptoms, I clinically focus on what I believe suits best the individual and the situation. I view life as a journey towards betterment of the person and reach for happiness.

I have been working with people for 30 years and look forward to helping clients create healthy relationships with me, themselves and with those in their lives. I enjoy working with individuals from all racial and cultural backgrounds who are motivated to make changes in their lives; to reduce painful reactions; and increase their understanding of what makes them feel happy, strong and self assured. I encourage clients to do homework assignments in between therapy sessions, in an effort to help clients take ownership of their process, and learn coping skills that will last beyond treatment.

Everything about our lives is centered in relationship; knowing how to effectively initiate and maintain supportive, enjoyable and mutually satisfying relationships will serve us throughout our lives. I strongly believe that each person has the capacity to heal, grow, and thrive in all aspects of their life. Caryn Lowe is a Certified EMDR therapist and has been studying and practicing EMDR for 13 years. Caryn is trained in psychodynamic and attachment based therapies. She has experience working with a wide spectrum of client issues including sexual assault, addiction,emotional abuse, grief, relational conflict, and medical trauma. She views ongoing education and consultation as cornerstones to providing excellent therapeutic service to her clients.

I have experience working with a wide variety of individuals and have worked in medical settings, counseling centers, churches, and non-profits. At this time I have the most experience working with survivors of childhood abuse and trauma. I also enjoy working with patients that are wanting to explore their identity, whether that be personal, career, or sexual identity. I have a strong value for attuned relationships and appropriate boundaries as I believe that in order to be the best versions of ourselves we must feel able to keep ourselves safe while building fulfilling and healing relationships.

My goal as a therapist is to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their emotional needs and overcome the obstacles which are keeping them from experiencing their fullest potential. I utilize a non-judgmental, compassionate and collaborative approaches in therapy to support clients in addressing their life, relationships and the challenges they face. As part of the therapeutic process, I may use several techniques including art, sand tray, role-play, mindfulness practices, play therapy approaches and activities to work on at home.

I believe the development of a secure and collaborative relationship is the most important aspect of the work I do with clients. Working from a strengths-based and relational perspective in a trauma informed manner, I have experience working with at-risk youth, families, and adults using a multi-theoretical approach including attachment theory, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, narrative therapy, neuroscience research, and alternative therapies such as art and nature therapy. I love helping youth and adults through change and deep transformation so that they can actualize their goals in life.

Therapy helps you craft a healthy relationship with yourself and others, and supports meaningful life choices. My clients struggle with issues such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, loneliness, relationship challenges, questions around life direction, and personal identity. Often they report feeling "stuck," frustrated in their ability to change or move forward in their lives. As a therapist, I like to work collaboratively with clients to support and strengthen what is already working and to bring insight to areas that need more attention. With compassion and kindness, my aim is to help my clients gain coping skills that foster greater well-being and help manage difficult feelings.

In my practice, I work with all age groups but specialize in working with at-risk youth and their families. I have worked extensively with children and adolescents in both school and community-based settings as well as providing therapy within the home. This allows me to provide in-the-moment parent coaching and support and formulate both therapeutic and behavioral plans for my clients and their families. I have also worked closely with children and teens who have an autism diagnosis, providing them and their families with support tools to help regulate behavior and reach their individual potential.

Other transitions require seismic, re-alignment to overcome multiple factors: family expectations; low self-esteem or beliefs/habits that create work unhappiness or stress.
