Susan Millner uses a variety of evidence-based practices with a specialty in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Susan received advanced training in ACT in 2010 and immediately connected with it on both a personal and professional level. Since then, she has presented at a number of conferences focusing on ACT and provided supervision/consultation to therapists looking to learn the model. In addition to ACT, Susan is trauma sensitive and utilizes and integrative approach that includes CBT, mindfulness, family systems, and a variety of other professional techniques.

I strive to create a therapeutic environment to help others heal and explore different challenges life may bring. My goal is to provide a warm, understanding, and safe environment where my clients can process their feelings and increase self-awareness, confidence, and learn new coping skills to manage stressors. Having sexual trauma can turn your world upside down. It can be very hard to build relationships, and trusting others becomes that much harder. If there is sexual trauma as a child then the trust and innocence are lost early. If it is as an adult then the meaning and idea of what you knew trust to be are now shifted. Being in a relationship with sexual trauma history can be a rollercoaster ride filled with unknown twists and turns. I know that the needs and changes may be different for those individuals and their partners. My goal is to work together with my clients to relieve the pressure of the reprogrammed trauma brain.

My therapeutic approach utilizes an empathic style to help clients develop a greater understanding into themselves and life events. Meaningful change begins with this insight, which acts as a catalyst to overcome obstacles. I work collaboratively with my clients to develop an open and honest relationship, while approaching each client's experience as unique.

I tailor my approach to each client's individual needs and often pull from my diverse background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Strengths-Based, Solution-Focused and Client-Centered philosophies, so clients can set realistic goals and identify their strengths to harness success. I have significant cross cultural experience from life in Kenya and Central America and I relate naturally and warmly to people of any culture or background.
