I have worked with young people and older adults in recovery from substance dependence and struggling with other addictions. In work with me, this person sets their own goal, whether that is to use in a safe and controlled manner, to reduce use, or to abstain completely. Often, a person in recovery will begin with one goal but then change it or add new ones. Addictions can lead to estrangement from loved ones and other problems so addressing these other related problems can be goals, too. Depression and anxiety are often part of withdrawal and recovery so we meet those challenges together, too.
There are many ways to treat addictions. We can work on a personalized guided meditation that you can use to help reduce anxiety and cravings, and to lift your mood. Behavioral activation can reduce depression and encourage recovery of the "pleasure circuit." Because its difficult to feel pleasure in early recovery, "having fun" is part of your homework!
