While I have a strong and lengthy background in treating autistic spectrum disorders, at all levels of functioning from toddler age to adults, including counseling for "mixed" couples (one neurodivergent and the other neurotypical), I have had good results with adult individuals who were recently diagnosed with autism and/or ADHD, and are learning to navigate through their diagnosis. I also work with individuals who are struggling with a variety of other issues, including anxiety and depression. As I’m doing virtual sessions exclusively at this time, I’m no longer working with children.
My general approach is based on cognitive-behavioral theory, and borrowing from more eclectic approaches as each case indicates. I use a lot of humor to help engage (especially) younger people. I focus on developing self-esteem, and help to create new perspectives to encourage social development and anxiety reduction, using a strength based approach.
Focusing on strengths creates the level of motivation needed for positive changes to occur. Using compassion, humor, empathy and wisdom gained from my own experience, my goal is to help each individual acknowledge and take pride in all of his/her personal characteristics, and to use them effectively.
