About
While I have a strong and lengthy background in treating autistic spectrum disorders (including PDD and Asperger's) from toddler age to adults, including counseling for "mixed" couples (one on the autistic spectrum and the other "neurotypical"), I have had good success with children, adolescents, young adults and families who are struggling with a variety of different issues, including: anxiety, depression, ADHD and other learning disorders, strained parent-child relationships and challenging behaviors. In addition, I will soon be re-starting social skills groups, adolescent support groups, and workshops for parents needing assistance with the challenging behaviors of their children.
My general approach is based on cognitive-behavioral theory, and different forms of play therapy, borrowing from more eclectic approaches as each case indicates. I use a lot of humor to help engage (especially) young people. I focus on developing self-esteem, and help to create new perspectives to encourage social development and anxiety reduction.
Focusing on strengths creates the level of motivation needed for positive changes to occur. Using compassion, humor, empathy and wisdom gained from my own experience, my goal is to help each individual acknowledge and take pride in all of his/her personal characteristics, and to use them effectively.
