I am a psychodynamically-trained, interpersonally-oriented, and existentially curious practitioner. The therapy that I practice is relational in nature — I aim to work both through the lens of relationships and in relationship with patients. I am of the belief that what arises through therapeutic process is equally as important as the therapeutic outcomes.

As a relational psychoanalyst, my approach is warm, collaborative and attuned.
Talk therapy works, but finding a therapist can be daunting. I offer free initial consultations to help you determine if we are a good fit and to point you in the right direction. I'm Dr. Paul Hiatt, a clinical psychologist, which means I have doctoral-level expertise in the comprehensive assessment and non-medication based treatment of mental health problems. I have particular interest in working with LGBT individuals. Clients tell me they feel supported, relaxed and comfortable opening up with me, providing significant relief in the short-term and facilitating change in the long-term.

I love to work with motivated clients, no matter how difficult it may be because I realize change is tough. I offer a unique approach for those trying to change patterns of thinking, break cycles of dysfunction and release pent up feelings. I offer faith-based counseling for those requesting it. I work well with those dealing with anxiety, relational issues, and trauma. Many clients seek me out for help with meditation, self discovery, spiritual counseling, health and weight goals, reducing depression and just having a place where they can "figure themselves out."

My clinical styles are relational and psychodynamic and I've worked with agencies to modernize addiction treatment with harm reduction psychotherapy.
I strive to create a collaborative, nonjudgmental space conducive to meaningful self-examination and change. My style is curious, at times challenging and, at others, affirming. I work with you to compassionately explore your life and identify new possibilities, as well as alter unrecognized habits that inhibit satisfaction and personal growth. Therapy with me is a compassionate and dedicated inquiry to help you feel better and thrive. 'Thriving' is unique to each of us and I will work with you define your idea of a fulfilling life, keeping in mind it may differ from social ideals ill-suited to satisfy many of us.

While I use a number of different experiential, relational and trauma-informed approaches tailored to individual context and need, I have spent over 10 years and 5000 hours of focused training and clinical supervision in the areas of Structural Family Therapy and Eco-Systemic Structural Family Therapy.
I am glad you found me. You are not alone, nor do not have to journey through this next chapter alone. Life can be filled with seasons of suffering, pain and change that too often result in anxiety, depression, trauma, disconnection and isolation. All of us can face these seasons in life that are highly difficult, but within these experiences it is possible to find deep resilience, healing and growth. I am passionate about helping individuals, couples and families create a path forward towards the life and relationships that you envision with yourself, your partner or your family. I would love to join you in this.

The journey toward personal growth and emotional well-being can be messy. Healing comes through real relationships based on trust and mutual respect. With this focus, integrating psychodynamic and relational counseling, I value the importance of understanding the unique dynamics that shape your relationships and influence your overall well-being. I don't want counseling to feel disconnected from real-world applications.

I have expertise in helping those struggling with: suicidality, depression, anxiety, PTSD, autism and other neurodivergence, ADHD, stage of life change, grief and loss, and relational concerns.
For most people taking the step to start working on therapeutic goals can be intimidating. I pride myself in utilizing a collaborative approach to treatment that meets clients where they are while also celebrating the progress they make along the way. I firmly believe that within each person lies the key to improving their own mental wellbeing. I help clients find strength within themselves by unearthing their personal key and then apply it to their life. As a therapist and supervisor I focus on family, couples and children's therapy, especially working with neurodivergence and the full autism spectrum using evidence-based models.

Approaches to therapy range from relational-dynamic to cognitive and dialectical behavioral.
I am a Pittsburgher and I'm proud to practice psychology in my home community. My goal is to see each client as a person first, and provide individualized healthcare. I see therapy as collaborative, and including both skill-building and self-exploration. In terms of self-exploration, I see the client as the expert in their own life, while a therapist is attuned to noticing themes or patterns that the client would have otherwise missed or avoided.

I have many years experience helping people who have anxiety, depression, addictions, compulsive behavior disorders (food, sex, gambling) and all kinds of relational challenges. I call myself a Wholistic Existential Psychologist, indicating that I work from a Depth Psychology perspective that emphasizes each person's unique life and the interaction of mind, body and spirit in finding balance and personal integration. I believe that a healing relationship is at the core of successful psychotherapy. I also believe that Psychotherapy is a process of completing unfinished business and rewriting negative personal narratives into more positive life stories.

My passion is working with children, teenagers, young adults, couples and families to process trauma and difficult experiences so they can experience growth and healing within themselves and their relationships. Through my work with individuals and family's I have learned the deep importance of understanding "what has happened" to people rather than viewing people through the lens of "what is wrong with people".

If you're looking for fluff free, no nonsense counseling, reach out to me. It's all too easy to lose touch with the things we stand for, as well as with the things that mean most to us. You were whole at one point, which means a path to sanity exists that is waiting to be rediscovered. Yet these behaviors holding you back have been heavily reinforced over time. The change ahead is not going to be easy or comfortable, but you don't have to face it alone. Past clients have told me that my ability to break down situations and clearly explain relational dynamics helped them to gain new insight into their histories and functioning.

In my current practice, I take a relational, client-centered approach to individual therapy, while remaining eclectic and drawing from CBT, DBT, EFT, and Attachment Theory.
Hi, I'm Derik Moore, LCSW. I worked as an outpatient psychotherapist and clinical supervisor for 10 years in the community mental health realm prior to establishing my own practice. I began my career working with those living with HIV as an activist in the mid-1990s in Newark and New Brunswick, NJ, where I engaged in street outreach and advocated for a harm reduction approach. This work informed my commitment to public health and to exploring how economic and sociological factors play significant roles in the ways we move through the world. I have also been a musician for nearly 40 years and offer virtual and in-person drum lessons.

Your relationships are your greatest gifts, as they are the key to your contentment, be they personal or professional in nature. If you lack peace within the context of your relationships then you are sure to be experiencing a similar level of dis-ease over the entire expanse of your existence. The well-being of your mind, body and spirit as a spouse, a parent, an employee, friend, neighbor, sibling and so on are all predicated on how well you are doing on an interpersonal level in each of those roles. Seeking work/life balance, familial harmony, or individual growth requires that we take a relational inventory.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
