In addition to my clinical training, I have a doctorate in philosophy with specialties in feminist and existential theory.
Therapy creates a space in which you can openly explore your thoughts and feelings, try out new ideas, and make sense of past and present within a safe and supportive relationship. I see it as a source of understanding and empowerment - it allows us to better know ourselves and also to be ourselves in the world more fully and freely. I treat a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, existential concerns, complex trauma, relationship difficulties, issues related to gender and sexuality, life transitions, and challenges that arise in academia. I welcome starting from either more immediate or long-term concerns.

Taking this first step of searching through profiles on Psychology Today demonstrates a certain level of commitment to improve the quality of your mental health. And it can also be quite overwhelming sifting through all the options (hello decision fatigue). Collectively we're all dealing with so much right now as human beings on this planet, and it is critically important for us to attend to our mental health needs. Whether navigating stressors of day-to-day life, or experiencing a more acute crisis, therapy can be an excellent source of support, healing and empowerment.

Therapy can be a great way to work through issues you might be having in your own life, in your relationship, or in your family. We are constantly affected by those closest (and sometimes farthest!) from us. These relationships can be helpful, harmful, or somewhere in between. Finding your way in the context of these relationships can help bring a sense of contentment to your life. I provide a supportive and respectful environment where you can do this important work.

Seeking out therapy can be an intimidating process. It’s common to feel like your mental health won’t improve, that you will always be “stuck” in unhelpful thinking patterns, uncomfortable body sensations, and actions that don’t align with your values. My goal is to cultivate a safe, inclusive space where we can work collaboratively to address your concerns and shift into a space of healing. Therapy is not typically a place where you can find “quick fixes,” therefore I work to establish an authentic, nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship with my clients to support them in finding and experiencing meaningful, long-term change.

In our daily lives, we face many challenges that can affect our mental health. One of the key factors in maintaining good mental health is resilience - the ability to overcome difficulties and bounce back from setbacks. The good news is that resilience is a skill that can be learned and developed. In therapy, the focus is often on reducing mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety. While these are important goals, simply feeling less bad is not enough to lead a fulfilling life. Our therapeutic approach aims not only to help you manage your symptoms but also to build resilience skills that will bring balance to your life.

I enjoy working with people who are often considered outsiders, those challenge the established norms of our society, in their pursuit of a more holistic future for themselves and our world. This includes activists, educators, artists, fellow mental health professionals, writers, musicians, and those who live in ways unique to themselves. A throughline of my work revolves around the realm of disabilities, many of which remain unrecognized by others. I believe that disability advocacy requires working through issues of power, autonomy, social inequality, and environment.

Compulsive behaviors impact all aspects of one’s life, including thoughts, feelings, and actions. They can lead to various addictions, including substance use, sex, social media, relationships, gambling, and more. People with compulsive behaviors often struggle to align their actions with personal goals. For more than twenty years, I have supported individuals struggling with compulsive behaviors. I built my practice upon the idea that anyone can recover if given the right tools and environment, and I aim to provide a safe space where clients gain insight into their emotions, experiences, and behavioral patterns.

I work with individuals and couples to create positive changes in their lives. This includes those struggling in areas such as self-esteem, intimacy, addressing emotional needs, healing from past hurts/trauma, a history of neglect or abuse, or challenges regarding gender and sexuality. I work with couples, straight/lesbian/gay, who are working on their relationship, whether as a result of an affair, or realizing differences that keep them from being close. My research focuses on men and the effects of expectations on men’s lives. Pursuing therapy represents a longing to heal. My work is about supporting that process.

For Gay, Bi, Queer Men, unresolved pain and unnamed hunger create severe ruptures in our here and now. Disruptive mood patterns and compulsions are signs of emotional injury that deserve a space to be held and cared for. Without language, we use our bodies and relationships to resolve the unresolved. I support folx through a healing and relational framework to reconnect with values, hoping to take committed action towards goals and wishes. Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
