I specialize in substance use issues and parenting.
Therapy is a space where we make sense of the world around us, much as humans have been striving to do since we first painted on cave walls. As your therapist, I will help you construct the story of your needs, your wants, your relationships, your hopes, and meaning in your life. I strive to provide a space that is safe and supportive so that you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself, foster self-compassion, and ultimately embark on a journey of personal growth and transformation.

My specialties are in substance use, addiction, mood and anxiety disorders, and relationships.
NOTE: I now accept insurance through Headway.co for clients in New York State ONLY -- If that changes for clients in other states, I will update here. How we think about our history, experiences, and relationships can center us, or can throw us off-balance and cause us to get stuck. I help clients examine how they are spending their time and energy and help them to make manageable change in line with their values. As we work together, we will uncover what it is you value -- what is important to you. We will work together to make shifts to increase happiness and lead to greater connectedness and clarity.

I have over ten years experience working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, and relationship issues.
Psychological health is much more than the absence of problems and mental illness. Even when things seem to be going well we may still feel that there is something missing and that our lives lack the happiness, purpose, and vitality that we desire. My approach begins with the identification of your values. This becomes the foundation of our work together. We then explore thoughts and feelings that get in the way of living a more meaningful and satisfying life and replace them with strategies that are more values consistent and effective in the pursuit of a more satisfying life.

I believe in the potential of all human beings to grow, change, and develop in ways that enrich themselves and those around them. Unfortunately, pain is often the touchstone of growth. Explored wisely, however, such pain can lead us to deeper understandings of ourselves and the world around us. Psychotherapy can be a valuable tool for turning our personal pain into personal growth. I have over 25 years of experience working with issues that have great impact on the LGBTQ community and beyond - the traumas of oppression, depression, anxiety, substance use, relational issues, career issues...the list goes on.

Do you struggle with relationships, career, family, loneliness? Unfulfilling relationships, substance use, depression/anxiety and career challenges are often the catalysts that bring many people to my practice. While painful, these motivators to therapy can lead to lasting change. It is my strong belief that it is the relationship or therapeutic alliance between client and therapist that ultimately heals. I conduct psychotherapy through a Gay/LGBTQ-affirmative and culturally humble framework.

I have specialized training in working with anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, stress, traumatic grief and loss, and substance use.
Many people seek out therapy at times when they feel disconnected, have a lot of worries and fears, or notice changes in their mood. Sometimes these concerns impact relationships and our friends and loved ones may not know how to support us during this time. That is okay. That is when working with a therapist can be helpful. In our work together, I am committed to helping you work through these and many other concerns. Sometimes we need a space to talk openly about what we are going through without fear of judgement. We will find solutions to increase your life satisfaction, happiness, and have more fulfilling relationships.

I am psychoanalytically-oriented and have specialized training in substance use (abstinence, harm reduction including processing psychedelic experiences) and trauma.
Sometimes, we look in the mirror and have difficulty understanding the face looking back at us. How did we get here? Is this the life I want to lead? Why do things have to be so hard? These are questions that can build slowly over time, or are the direct result of events we have endured. I can help you learn about the things that move you, further your exploration of your inner world, and assist you in deciding what really matters to you. My goal is to act as your guide, collaborating with you in your journey to find balance and a life worth living.

I have 4+ years of experience working at a private, substance use disorder outpatient treatment center.
I work very well with adolescents and adults whom struggle to believe that therapy could be beneficial for them. Through my experience, I learned that utilizing psychodynamic theory with the individual during the first several months of therapy aids in building a strong therapeutic relationship. Thus, my initial goal is to help the individual understand how their experiences in life - both positive and negative - contributed to shaping their behaviors, thought patterns, interests, etc. This will help the individual to identify unconscious stressors and improve their emotional response.

Whether with partners, family, friends, children, parents or at your work, relationships are the centerpieces of our lives. Handled thoughtfully, they uplift, or they can frustrate, provoke guilt and aggravate. For twenty-five years I have helped people to find greater satisfaction through better understanding of the events in their lives, along with honest discussions of options and helping to find the motivation to move forward. I have published articles about marriage, parenting, and growing healthier relationships, and a book: HOW TO KNOW IF ITS TIME TO GO. Website: lbirnbach.com. I work interactively and confidentially.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
