Long-term happiness typically comes from enriching connections to other people. Unfortunately, most of us receive sparse training on how to create and sustain healthy relationships. My particular passion is teaching couples and families how to give love and support--despite our inherent human flaws. In fact, good relationship skills are likely to increase satisfaction and success at work, school, or with friends. I approach couples therapy primarily from the Relational Life perspective developed by Terry Real, but I bring in elements from other modalities when appropriate. The primary focus is your relationship and what you need.

When I first meet with clients, my goal is to help them find the main road back to their original journey from the exit that led them to the off ramp- I offer a steady hand for them to successfully maneuver in the foggy season of their lives. I provide a supportive environment suitable for helping clients form new insights in achieving alternate healthier perspectives than the ineffective solutions currently in use. I provide an atmosphere of professionalism, empathy, and privacy suitable for positive growth and achievable solutions.

For me, being a therapist is a privilege. I like to work with anyone eager to understand what is happening to them in their life. Together, we'll try to understand the factors that are creating the trouble - including some of the unconscious ones - and then we'll put them in perspective, cut them down to size, and talk about what can be done. I create a safe, intelligent, and empathic environment for counseling where we can talk about anything without judgment. My office is a safe place to be yourself. So many of our problems have their root in isolation and anxiety, and that is something we can address together.

One size never fits all. Each person and issue needs its own caring approach. Therapy includes: DBT, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, internal family systems, and trauma work, all with acceptance, warmth, and healing. Gains rely on maximum challenge with maximum support. I have successfully struggled in my life as a son, husband, and father of four. I know the pain of being wounded and the rewards of healing. For over 50 years I have helped kids and families as a teacher, school counselor, therapist, and supervising professor in three graduate counseling programs, including the Captains' Masters at the USMA at West Point.

When I first meet clients, I encourage them to be fascinated by the way their mind works. An ideal component of a successful therapy is when clients become curious about themselves, which allows them to gain insight into their problems. I personally believe, based on my research and experience, that what the human mind concentrates on has an influence on what happens in one's life. By watching the patterns of our thoughts we can modify and redirect them, with the goal of making healthier and more life-affirming decisions. The human mind has evolved to focus on problems and to anticipate more of them in the future.

Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unhappy? Are you and your partner having trouble communicating or getting along? Are you concerned about your child's behavior? Going through a difficult life transition? If so, I can help! My goal as a therapist is to offer connection and support. By talking about the challenges you're facing in a safe and non-judgmental space, I help my clients gain greater insight and awareness to the underlying causes of their distress. From there, I work collaboratively with my clients to find solutions to their problems that are practical and long-lasting.

My goal in working with clients is to work collaboratively to enhance their effectiveness and ability to function up to their potential. Whether an individual, a couple or an organization, we first create a relationship based on trust. After determining the challenges to achieving enhanced performance, we establish specific goals and strategies for moving towards those goals.

I conduct psychotherapy through a Gay/LGBTQ-affirmative and culturally humble framework. Now Offering Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy.

My areas of practice include child adolescent, individual and couples treatment as well as psycho-educational testing. Whether you have a clear idea of the help you are seeking-in depth psychotherapy- a brief consultation, a psychological evaluation-or have not yet defined your own goals, the best first step is to find a psychologist who is highly trained in more than one approach, someone with extensive experience who's humanity and good sense you can trust. A consultation can help to identify your goals and to decide what approach may be most helpful.

I successfully work with persons chemically addicted to drugs and alcohol. A large part of my focus is working with individuals that would benefit from the use of an addiction medication, such as Methadone or Suboxone. I also work with non-chemically addicted individuals such as problem gamblers. It is a recognized strength to work with addicted individuals with respect and dignity and without moral judgment. I support individuals' use of 12 step programs however; I effectively work with individuals who do not prescribe to 12 step philosophies.

If the flowers in your garden are wilted instead of vivacious, perhaps you are watering the wrong lot-- and if you find yourself to be in the right lot and weeds are growing instead of flowers, perhaps you better check what kind of seed was sowed; and after all of that, if the results you are seeing are different from what you expected, perhaps I can assist you with this vexing dilemma. At Four Seasons Therapy the focus is on you and how to work the solution to reach your life's goals.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
