Do you feel like your relationships are suffering? Are you or a loved one looking for help with depression, anxiety, or stress? Therapy is a great way to get your life unstuck and moving forward again. I encourage you to call me for a free initial phone consultation so that I can offer you some ideas about how therapy can be helpful to you, what it involves, and how long it might last. At the very least, you'll come away with lots of answers to your questions about therapy and how it works.

I believe strongly in understanding the connection between our physical and mental health. With extensive experience in both mental health and wellness, I bring a unique and balanced approach to clinical work. I provide evidence-based psychotherapy that is values-driven, mindful of our individuality and culture, and emphasizes the importance of physical health and lifestyle as a cornerstone of treatment. I often incorporate methods from a variety of theoretical orientations.

My name is Roger Grossman I literally wrote to book on how to have a successful marriage: "Making Marriage Work: A User’s Guide To A Successful Marriage" by Roger Grossman, I Am Not The Smile and Nod Therapist. I roll up my sleeves and get in there with you. I have a great BS detector. I’ll call you on your stuff. We’ll laugh (a lot).

For over 24 years, I've collaborated with people to resolve their psychological trauma, phobias, anxiety & stress as well as maximize responses to their medical diagnoses, treatments & conditions. This clinical focus stems from both a personal medical challenge since age 12 and research on treating women with breast cancer and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet Kaiser research (1998) finding 70% of primary care visits are driven by mental, emotional and relational issues highlights how mind and body are interwoven for each of us. This interplay provides leverage for preventive medicine, for responding to illness and for maximizing peak performance.

As a therapist, I want to work with people to help them to get unstuck. There are a lot of different ways one can be stuck, physically (pain), emotionally, socially, professionally, with a substance and many others. Like spinning your tires when stuck in the mud. It is the wrong thing to do, but it is the easiest thing to try when you are alone. Getting unstuck most times requires some help. That is where therapy can come in handy. Please contact me for a brief consultation to see if I can be the right person to help you.

I often work with clients who struggle with never feeling good enough. This would surprise people around you as there's a good chance you've found success in life. You excelled academically, have advanced your career, and appear confident to others, but internally you feel different. The drive to perform has been an attempt to finally feel like you are enough. I can help you begin to look at how these patterns were at one time protective, but may no longer fit in your life. We will work together to heal the underlying wounds these patterns are protecting.

For me, the focus of therapy is not primarily to fix disorders or cure diseases; I seek to increase your positive life skills rather than address negative patterns. What happens in the therapy hour is a microcosm of life at large. How you do anything is how you do everything. And so, I give special attention to the actual, to the present moment, in particular your immediate subjective experience. Ultimately, when you become aware of your resistance(s) to pain and return to wholeness and authenticity, my work is done.

I also work with issues related to physical and sexual abuse.
Making the decision to see a therapist is not an easy one, and it often takes a fair amount of courage to do so. For those who decide that therapy is appropriate, the outcome can be positive, bringing them more intimacy and fulfillment. Therapy provides the opportunity to improve communication, reduce stress, anxiety and anger, and improve the most important relationship we have....the one we have with ourselves.

This includes areas of community mental health, private practice, residential facilities, foster care, county mental health, juvenile hall, schools, substance abuse and chemical dependency, adults with severe and persistent mental illness, and crisis intervention.
As human beings we learn, develop meaning, and create a sense of purpose through each other and the relationships we form. In the same spirit I believe the therapeutic process is driven by the relationship formed between the client and the therapist. This is why my approach in therapy is guided by the question - "How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for their personal growth?" I strive to create an empathic, nonjudgmental atmosphere where you feel safe and empowered to work toward personal growth and creating lasting change; forming trust and leaning toward vulnerability.

You are not broken. It is human to feel loss, sadness, anger, fear, or unworthiness. Recent advances in neuroscience can help us understand why we feel stuck, sad, stressed, scared or alone. When we begin to understand the implicit/unconscious feelings/beliefs that automatically run inside of us we begin a journey that can lead to more awareness, and therefore to more choice in our lives. The hardest part of this journey is the first step; to make your growth a priority enough to tolerate the discomfort of facing what isn't working.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
