I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 20 years of experience. I believe that therapy is not necessarily about fixing things or oneself, but an act of self care. My current focus is on helping clients working through various life transitions, including
loss
and
grief
. As I see it, there are many different losses in our life; not necessarily losing a loved one, pet or possessions, etc. Over time in our life, we all may experience other losses, such as our expectations, goals and dreams. The goal and process of therapy can be viewed as “
mourning
one’s losses”.

I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and adults around issues of
grief
and
loss
(
death
and non-
death
: divorce, relationship changes, life transitions, adoption, chronic illness) and anxiety. Through my many years working with bereaved children and their caregivers, I have learned that we all grieve in our own way and in our own time. In an attempt to create a refuge from the cultural pressure “to move on,” I strive to offer a welcoming, nurturing, and safe space for you to grieve your
loss
, to find hope and connection, and to discover ways to heal and to grow.

Bereavement
and
loss
: young adults/parents who are experiencing transitions like divorce or illness or
death
of a relative.
With 25 years of experience, I do individual and group psychotherapy the young adult population and see middle-aged adults in individual and couples therapy. Ages 13 and up come here with issues around
loss
; relational difficulties; regulating moods; self-injury; sadness and depression; bipolar disorder; the coming out process; and understanding a history of childhood sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Adults often come in with marital issues such as infidelity and help and support going through the divorce process and for advice around dealing with their teenagers.

Welcome! I believe that the most successful therapy occurs when a strong clinical rapport is developed between therapist and client(s). To that end, I will work with you (or your teen) to create a warm, therapeutic environment where we can collaboratively determine your needs and goals, and then work together toward achieving those goals. My approach to therapy is eclectic, which means I pull from a number of different theoretical orientations. This allows me the flexibility to tailor the treatment according to your unique needs.

I have helped people navigate life transitions (chosen or unchosen),
grief

loss
, unresolved trauma, family dysfunction and more.
Our lives consist of welcome routines and happy memories, turning points and challenges. Sometimes it is painfully difficult. Perhaps you have experienced the
loss
of a dream or a loved one, or been unable to move past a traumatic event. Maybe life feels like a daily rut, void of meaning or joy. Even in the company of people who care about us we can feel alone, sad or overwhelmed. The good news is we can find connection, experience change and move through pain and struggle to a place of greater freedom and happiness.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
