I offer therapy tailored to meet my clients' needs and draw from a variety of theoretical orientations, including psychodynamic (insight oriented), cognitive-behavioral (skills), and trauma-informed treatments (including
EMDR
).
Our lives consist of welcome routines and happy memories, turning points and challenges. Sometimes it is painfully difficult. Perhaps you have experienced the loss of a dream or a loved one, or been unable to move past a traumatic event. Maybe life feels like a daily rut, void of meaning or joy. Even in the company of people who care about us we can feel alone, sad or overwhelmed. The good news is we can find connection, experience change and move through pain and struggle to a place of greater freedom and happiness.

Everyone experiences distressing or overwhelming challenges at different points in life. Many people struggle to manage these inevitable difficulties, get stuck and then subsequently feel defined by their emotional pain. This can negatively impact relationships, ambitions, work and self-worth. I believe in people’s inherent right to live meaningful and joyful lives and in their ability to choose how to respond to life’s challenges. I support my clients through their courageous process of self-exploration and self-compassion.

EMDR
and Brainspotting are effective techniques to help you experience the transformative results you want, faster than traditional talk therapy alone.

As an
EMDR
and trauma therapist I believe that we all respond differently to stressors, whether they take us by surprise or whether we see them coming.
You didn’t expect life to look like this. You feel overwhelmed, disillusioned, or like your life is never going to change. You feel disconnected from your friends, family, and maybe even yourself. But you don’t want to live your life this way anymore. You’re no longer happy with the status quo. Most of all, you’re ready to feel free and regain control of your life. Therapy can help you manage the stress in your life and create the life you want, whatever that may look like.

My original training/orientation in psychodynamic and family systems approaches has expanded to include several contemporary approaches (including but not limited to IFS and
EMDR
) which have achieved enhanced results for those who come to see me.
I see adults of all ages, seeking help in dealing with issues such as depression and difficulties in relationships. My style is active, interactive, nonjudgmental, warm, and empathetic, with a sense of humor. Mood and relational problems are sometimes related to ways that people have reacted and adapted to past traumatic experiences, which may also become a focus of therapy.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
