As someone who has attended counselling myself for anxiety and ADHD , I noticed that plain “talk therapy” was not the most effective method for so many of us so, with that in mind, I developed a goal-oriented, evidence-based approach with my clients that allows them to develop tools to accept life’s challenges while moving towards their values and goal.
I'm currently not accepting new patients. My name is Fernanda Alves, and I am originally from Brazil, where I received my bachelor's degree in Psychology in 2006. After graduating, I immigrated to the US to pursue my master's degree in mental health, which I completed in 2012. Since then, I have worked as an outpatient therapist for two nonprofit organizations, where I obtained experience working with children, adolescents, and families. At the beginning of 2020, I opened my practice, where I work with children, adolescents and adults.

My ideal client is someone open to the process of therapy. Someone who is willing to show up for themselves, and “put in the work”. My client may be someone dealing with anxiety, depression, or challenges of ADHD , such as Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria. My client may be feeling in a rut or “stuck” in personal aspects of their life. My client may be challenged by different phases and stages of life, by not feeling capable or feeling easily overwhelmed. They want to engage in therapy and work on achieving their personal goals in a space where they are seen, heard, validated and encouraged.

I add value, and I go away.
I am driven by directness and efficiency. My approach is unencumbered by therapeutic conventions of insurance approval, clinical setting, and therapy tropes. I offer a novel approach to short and long term therapy in a location of your choosing, such as your home or office, or remotely at your discretion. I do not accept insurance, such that only you will determine the visit frequency. I offer a Concierge program as well. Please inquire if you wish to utilize aspects of my expertise as a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Nutritionist, and/or Registered Yoga Teacher (200-hr) to augment therapy.

I do not envision an ideal client; I accept people where they are. But if I had to, this person would be open/honest, eager to dive in, and ready to reconsider their prior notions/ideas and behaviors that have not served them. They would practice the discussed changes in their daily lives and report back on their progress during sessions. I would like to assist you in tackling challenging aspects of your life to help you find balance. I am a naturally empathetic person who truly cares for others' well-being. I actively listen to understand and will provide honest but compassionate feedback

NEW PARENT'S GROUP STARTING NOW: I am starting a parent group that provides a positive alternative, as effective as individual therapy for your child or teen. The group experience will energize you with insight and support so you can restore your child's own natural self-righting capacities. I have been a child and family therapist for 35 years. I offer psychotherapy without the psycho-babble, liberating people of any age to use common sense and their family's love to make the most of life's opportunities.

I consider it an honor to guide people on their journey through this life, to help them release old patterns of thought, feeling and behavior that interfere with their sense of well-being and wholeness, resolve the effects of lingering pain and/or past trauma, explore what is important and meaningful in their lives, and find new purpose and depth in themselves and in their relationship to the world around them. If you find yourself lost, in your relationships and/or your life, in a world that makes little sense, we can find a path and way of being that feels right for you in the most fulfilling way.

My ideal client would present solution-focused with a desire to gain insight and understanding of presenting symptomatically and how those symptoms manifested. Their issues, regardless of being situational or organic, should be addressed directly with kindness and acceptance without judgement. The need should be to not only identify and address their current symptoms but also to work towards a more profound understanding of why such symptoms are present and how to create an opportunity for change. The goal should support a progressive change to improve quality of life.

I believe that as unique individuals we should all be appreciated and understood from several angles - social, biological, psychological, cultural, and sometimes spiritual - to get the best sense of who we are as complete people. This requires a focus not just on our problems and challenges but also on our strengths and resources. These aspects of our identities color the way we give meaning to our past, our future, our relationships, and our struggles. Psychotherapy should be a process that recognizes these factors while creating a safe, caring, and creative atmosphere to provide treatment based on sound theory and research.

No one is born a parent. Parenting, and especially co-parenting, can be even more challenging when partners disagree, or when larger issues about the marriage or a divorce arise. I help parents understand how to be the best mothers and fathers they can be for their children, and how to work together to support them even under difficult circumstances. I also work directly with couples and families experiencing conflict (together or as individuals), and can provide divorce and family mediation when needed.

I provide clients with a safe, supportive & respectful therapy/coaching experience. I’m there to listen. They can share “stories, past, present, life stresses/transition, mental health issues, family/couples goals” etc. I build upon clients strengths as we work together to achieve their goals. As a therapist & life coach I strive to provide my clients with a positive experience. Treatment concludes with them feeling better about themselves & having met "their goals”. The passion I felt when chose this field, early on in high school, still remains:). Through challenging times I’m grateful to be here, to help those in need.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
