Beginning counseling or job coaching is an important life decision and a clear sign of one’s underlying health and resiliency. I find, more often than not, that people can be helped to release a level of optimism and resiliency that leads them to new, “do-able” goals and choices. All of this reflects a natural foundation of health, even when we experience such common challenges as depression, conflicts at work, fears, ongoing stress or anxiety. Counseling requires some risk-taking. It also takes a willingness to become more self-aware.

I've been in private practice for 34 years. I've had extensive training in both theoretical and didactic psychotherapy. An important part of my training was my own work and research in understanding myself and my marriage and other important relationships. This is why I think I am so confident at being both a couples therapist and an individual therapist. I believe this is primarily an educational process or a re-educational process.

I've worked in schools for the last twenty-three years, helping an array of children and teens experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as social, emotional, and academic challenges. I believe that young people are all amazing in their own ways. Children benefit from having someone in their corner unconditionally to help develop skills and strategies in an effort to become increasingly confident, independent, and successful both in and out of school. I value communication with parents to best help each client. I approach all of my clients in a warm and compassionate manner in an effort to develop a strong connection.

Through the course of a day, we all play multiple roles. Sometimes those roles can become restrictive and rigid, even inauthentic, as anxiety, depression, or shame cause us to feel less and less able to share ourselves honestly with those around us. For some, the trusting relationship created in therapy offers one of the few places where hiding is no longer necessary and one's whole self can be acknowledged without judgment, without shame. Together, we will create an environment conducive to the exploration of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that lends to greater self-understanding, new perspectives, and lasting change.

Through my practice as an LMHC, I have found my style matches perfectly with people living with everyday mental illness such as anxiety/depression/substance use/life stress. Most clients come to me for support with identifying issues, assessing them and then problem solving to overcome and strengthen their own skill set and use of coping skills. My clients enjoy traditional talk therapy as well as setting some goals and using my service to keep them accountable. Whether you are looking for a non biased, clinical, third party to chat with or someone to process and overcome stressors and life issues, you are in the right spot.

I recognize that it's a big step to reach out and invite someone to help you think about your life and what's not working for you. I have worked with many people who have felt that they were going around in circles, unable to realize their full innate potential. My work with you will be focused internally, and primarily towards helping you to focus on your 'Self'. Together we'll find paths that are paved with your wisdom, strength, and increased knowledge about what has got in the way. My focus is always to understand what your end goal might look like.

We all have ups and downs but when the depressed and anxious days outnumber the good ones, something’s wrong. When the fights outweigh the love in your relationship, something’s wrong. And when the bad memories outnumber the happy ones, it’s time to do something about it.

I work with adolescents, college students, young professionals, and adults navigating stress, trauma, and major life transitions. Many clients come in feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, conflict, or patterns that repeat despite their best efforts. My background includes EMDR training and work in social pragmatics, vocational rehabilitation, and college counseling, which helps me connect therapy with real-life challenges. I’ve presented nationally on neurodiversity and bring a nuanced understanding of ADHD, autism, and executive functioning. My practice is affirming of diverse experiences with gender and sexuality.

For over twenty years I have been providing counseling to families where one or more members are experiencing anxiety, depression, family conflict, school avoidance and/or the adolescent’s initial expression is resistance to treatment. My adolescent clientele and their family members range from first time engagers of therapeutic support to those that have had multiple therapists. I have found that most adolescents overtly or secretly welcome support in navigating the delicate dance of dependence and individuation, once the therapist is able to develop an effective rapport.

With over 30 years experience, I have successfully helped others with issues of anxiety, depression, trauma, low self worth/esteem and relationship struggles. While providing a safe and comfortable atmosphere, together we will explore your concerns and how to facilitate the change you're hoping for. Sometimes we just need an objective individual to listen, understand and support us. Other times we might need to be gently challenged. My experience that change occurs when one is feeling both supported and challenged. I try to provide both. Please feel free to contact me and we can talk about how I can be helpful.

In my 24 years as social worker at McLean Hospital and in private practice, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families who are dealing addiction to drugs and alcohol. I believe that one size does not fit all in the recovery process. I find traditional forms of recovery such as 12-step programs to be very helpful. I also utilize alternatives such as motivational enhancement therapy SMART recovery, which utilizes behavior modification techniques. I aid families in pursuing Al-Anon, where appropriate. I also facilitate interventions, both traditional and the CRAFT model, which utilizes a positive reinforcement approach.

You may be facing challenges in your life or are having difficulty coping with the stress of everyday life. My approach is to provide a caring, empathetic and supportive environment in which we can develop a partnership to foster change, healing, and growth. I believe your problems do not define you and are not the entirety of who you are. I recognize that our own background and experiences impact us and our ability to adapt to stress. Race, culture, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation and the community we live in can influence how we perceive things.

Do you feel like your past problems, being cheated on, being left, and being emotionally abused have left you depressed and ruined you for love? Do you feel like no matter what you do you will always be alone in a loveless life or worse, you will settle for a person that's not good for you at all? The real problem is that you haven't made the shifts. When you make the shifts you'll have complete control over who you are with, you will walk away from low-quality people, and you will have defeated your inner dark world that brings you back to trash relationships and into that relationship of outstanding sex that's drama free.

As a clinical neuropsychologist I work with clients to identify areas of cognitive strength and weakness and relate those patterns to known profiles of brain-behavior relationship. The process involves an interview, collateral contacts, and carefully selected standardized assessment of brain and emotional functioning. A neuropsychological evaluation may help identify dementia, direct therapies after traumatic brain injury, or tease out ADHD from learning disorder and other developmental conditions.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
