I would like to to let my future clients know that for over thirty years I have offered compassionate, solution focused therapy to individuals, couples and families who are changing their lives. Many experienced trauma, a painful loss or difficulty in becoming true to themselves. For some, anxiety, depression or debilitating anger create roadblocks to happiness and connection. Others may be managing health issues, having problems with communication, intimacy, gender identification or sexual behavior concerns. It continues to be a privilege and an honor to be asked to walk with them through to happier, more fulfilled lives.

Compassion is the most significant and integral component of therapy. My goal is to create a warm, respectful environment in which clients feel comfortable exploring their innermost feelings. Genuine and empathic in my approach, I believe in the strength of the individual to face life's challenges and to create new patterns of behavior and communication. I also believe clients must have compassion for themselves. Such compassion will lead to greater curiosity of the self and acceptance of one's experiences. This, in turn, enables the individual to see more clearly, gain new perspectives and find new solutions.

Check back June 2023 for availability. Psychotherapy can provide a caring and safe space to navigate life's many transitions and challenges -- both expected and unexpected. I approach my work from a place of respect, warmth, and curiosity toward my clients and their concerns. I help clients develop understanding and skills that allow them to reduce symptoms, facilitate personal growth, and make positive changes in their lives. Each client receives individually tailored treatment and, together, we identify and develop therapeutic goals. It is an honor for me to work with individuals on their personal journeys.

With adults I provide a supportive environment to work on practical strategies to improve your life. Our main focus is on your present and future, but if past feelings, behaviors and situations are still getting in your way we explore what happened and work on creating healthier patterns. In working with children and teens I teach skills and strategies, and periodically bring parents into sessions. I have expertise to share, but you are the expert on your child! We'll all work together to build on your child's strengths, increase their confidence and solve problems at home or school.

After more than 20 years of talking with people who are struggling with their lives both individually and in relationships, I am very aware of what helps people find their way. In part it is educational, helping to give an understanding of how our minds work. Knowledge is power. It is also, in part, helping to people to discover their own voice, their sense of self and the power they have to create the kind of life they wish to lead. We all have an innate desire to be fully human. I see it as my task to help people discover their humanity.

My belief is that each client has within them the ability for positive change and healthy functioning. I consider it a privilege to hear clients' stories and strive to create a safe and collaborative environment in which we can explore strengths and challenges. In my work, I draw from psychodynamic and relational perspectives; the goal to better understand how past experiences and relationships affect current situations. Depending on the individual, I incorporate techniques from other approaches, such as Behavioral, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I consider it essential to customize treatment to client's needs and goals.

I believe that therapy helps people move through the blocks in their life that keep them from meeting their full potential. The therapies I use, EMDR, Brainspotting, Gentle Reprocessing and Hypnotherapy dissolve those blocks. It could be past trauma or the smaller traumas in life that leave us with negative beliefs that prevent full access to our core. Get to your core and change your life! EMDR, Brainspotting, Gentle Reprocessing, Hypnosis, TAT, other energy therapies will facilitate the healthy change you desire.

As of February, 2021, regrettably my practice is full. Developing a therapeutic alliance based on respect and empathy is the first step in my work with clients. With a genuine connection, I help clients develop increased insight and improved coping strategies to better manage their symptoms, and ultimately improve daily functioning and life satisfaction. I work collaboratively with clients around their clinical needs to ensure their established goals are being met. I use empirically based approaches such as CBT, ERP, ACT and mindfulness. My current work at McLean Hospital keeps me knowledgable about new developments in the field.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
