Women today are conditioned to fulfill many roles, be it by personal trauma, family pressures, societal norms, or multi-generational patterns.
With 25 years in the counseling field, I guide women out of self-doubt, fear, guilt, worry and stress and into a life of personal growth, self-acceptance, empowerment, authenticity and freedom. I use Western evidence-based practices of cognitive behavioral and other counseling therapies to help clients regulate their nervous systems, create better boundaries, improve self-care, and increase overall life satisfaction. I also incorporate time-honored Eastern traditions such as breathwork, yoga, reiki, and meditation to promote self-compassion, self-trust and self-love, all essential ingredients for meaningful connections with others.

Before entering private practice with Leek Therapy, my primary work focused on community mental health, complex trauma, and social justice. Working in non-profit organizations and residential programs, I developed a relational therapeutic approach that values trauma-informed and culturally responsive interventions. Life is tough at best, traumatic at worst. People let us down or we let ourselves down. We may repeat patterns that once seemed to work for us, but are now impeding our growth. Often we know what we "should" do to feel better, but can't seem to actualize our intentions. Or we become so overwhelmed with messages that we have to fix ourselves that over time our resolve weakens and we feel stuck, frustrated, and helpless. It can feel uncomfortable to ask for help when we're struggling, but we are not wired to walk this life alone; we all need a safe space where we can share our hurts, disappointments, and losses.

Hi there! I'm Colleen Sweeney, MA and I understand how difficult it can be to speak up when life feels overwhelming. As a teen or preteen, asking for help can feel almost impossible. Sometimes it feels like you are totally alone in what you are feeling and going through. It takes incredible bravery to reach out, and I acknowledge that courage. Maybe you don’t even want to talk about it, whatever "it" is—and that’s okay. My goal is to create a warm, welcoming, and safe environment where you feel comfortable exploring your thoughts and concerns. Growing up, you might hear that others have it worse, but your feelings and experiences

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
