You might seem like you’re holding it all together, but inside feel overwhelmed or disconnected. High-achieving students and professionals often carry the weight of expectations from family, culture and society. It can leave you feeling exhausted, unsure of yourself, and disconnected from your own needs. I create space for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse, and other historically marginalized clients to slow down and be known, accepted, and supported as their full selves.

It happens to the vast majority of us at some point in our lives. Whether it be due to a tragic loss, perceived short comings in life and/or struggles with substance use. It is all too common for these struggles to trigger an avalanche of negative thoughts that can forge a pathway in our minds, causing us to feel less than over period of time. We all just want to feel human again, and with time we can. It is in fact possible for us to retrain our minds to view alternate outcomes instead of merely the worst possible one. We can empower ourselves to be redefined not by our struggles, but by our response to said struggles.

If sheer willpower was enough, you wouldn't still feel stuck. Stress, anxiety, anger, relationships, and life's pressures don't fix themselves. Yet, many men feel that therapy is about endless talk without forward movement.

My practice, 'KindMind Crossroads', is built on the foundation of acceptance, empathy, inclusivity and safety. The name of my practice is to convey the notion that we all experience a crossroad of challenges at varying points throughout our lives. The crossroad, even though often overwhelming, can be a time for healing, growth and renewal. For some of us, that means laying an entirely new path in which to walk; for many others it might mean repairing or adding on to the ones that already exist. I will help you navigate those challenging paths with a safe, warm, person centered, accepting and collaborative treatment approach.

I became a therapist because I saw early on how men are conditioned to minimize their own emotional needs and avoid vulnerability. For my own life, I wanted to model something different. In the decade since I started down this path, I've met many people grappling with social expectations as I have. My experience working with clients of all backgrounds has reaffirmed for me that, while we all lead very different lives, today's world nudges each of us towards isolation, anxiety, insecurity, and overwhelm. If you're feeling stuck, burnt out, or just want a nonjudgmental space to explore your thoughts and feelings, let's chat.

Our ideal clients recognize—or are beginning to recognize—that their struggles don't exist in isolation. They understand (or are curious about the idea) that their challenges are shaped by and embedded within their relationships, families, and broader systems. They may be partners stuck in painful cycles they can't seem to break, even though all parties genuinely want things to be different. They may be families where one person has been identified as "the problem," but everyone is feeling the strain. Or they may be individuals who keep finding themselves in similar relationship patterns and are ready to understand why.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
