Often, people turn toward therapy when something feels stuck that wants help to move, or something feels turbulent that wants to be calmed. Sometimes we need help balancing the two, and sometimes we don't even know what we need yet! If you know that something needs to change and you'd like to explore that, I'd love to speak with you. Whether you’re navigating grief, life transitions, relationships, work, self-esteem, stress, worry, parenting, or simply learning to nurture and heal parts of yourself, I’d be honored to be your co-pilot. After years in the medical field, I especially love working with medical professionals.

I work with adults from many diverse backgrounds and with a wide variety of therapeutic goals. I specialize in working with people who struggle with low self-esteem, those who suffered childhood abuse and/or neglect, who are interested in healing their ancestral and intergenerational trauma patterns, relational and attachment issues, and codependent tendencies. I also support clients who are becoming leaders or need help navigating the tricky waters of being a leader, are wanting to step into their creative potential, or are interested in living life outside the box.

We all have the capacity to experience joy and happiness, but when we carry unresolved trauma of any type, life can become a constant struggle. I specialize in private intensive therapy retreats that offer significant results in days, not years. My retreats combine recent advances in neuroscience and attachment research with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Progressive Counting (PC) and Internal Family Systems (IFS), enabling us to work with your underlying core issues – to get right to the heart of the problem – so that your symptoms are totally eliminated or significantly decreased.

Trauma, anxiety, depression and other issues all affect your brain/body functioning. Hearts can race, minds can spin, palms can sweat, heads can be foggy and you may feel as if you are constantly in danger even when you aren’t.

Dr. Smith is a licensed clinical psychologist who enjoys working with adults of all ages who present with a range of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, major life transitions, loss/ grief, histories of acute or complex trauma, or low self esteem . She is concerned with understanding the whole person with whom she is sitting, and not solely their symptoms. This stems from a belief that psychotherapy is useful not only for reducing suffering; it is also a dynamic process from which a deeper sense of self, increased confidence, and meaningful life changes can emerge.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
