With any disability comes a long list of consequential problems: chronic pain, depression , opioid addiction, etc.
Entering into the therapeutic process is a brave endeavor. I consider it a privilege to work with individuals who are searching for ways to be more authentic in their daily lives. So many of us get broadsided by life, be it a sudden death, a near fatal accident, relationship issues, or just a nagging desire to be more joyful! We will strive to unravel the complications that life and any kind of challenge may bring. My goal for you is to learn how to allow yourself to live more fully each day. I firmly believe that every person holds his or her own truth.

Since 1990 I have helped people with anxiety, depression , addiction issues, relationships, life transitions, loss, illness, pain, healing, creative challenges, recent and past trauma, and high sensitivity (HSP).
My intention is to help people discover lasting pathways to feel better. I will bring my warmth, heart, experience and presence to our unique collaboration as we focus on how you want to feel in your life. I practice a body-centered approach to counseling. Woven through our talking together will be periods of mindfulness and tuning in as a way to deepen awareness, growth and healing. When we have the support we need--we feel more freedom to be ourselves emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually. As distortions release--we naturally heal, improve our relationships, and make authentic life choices that feel good.

Suffering results from our disconnection from our self, our bodies, friends, families and world and the Divine. This may manifest as anxiety, depression or other difficulties depending on an individual's in-born biology and life experiences. I work collaboratively with each individual according to their needs and desires. I am most interested in facilitating lasting change at the deepest level.

People often seek therapy during times of crisis, when they’re feeling particularly vulnerable and raw. Many people turn to psychotherapy to work through anxiety, depression , or trauma, or because they want to establish, repair, or deepen their relationships. Sometimes they want support adjusting to life transitions, or help developing personal insight and self-awareness. There may be clearly identifiable short-term goals that rise to the top during a crisis and are resolved in a relatively short period of time, but some people also like the process of self-exploration and growth that comes with the practice of more in-depth work.

Social and political distress are causing fear and alienation, along with feelings of disempowerment and personal inadequacy with less community for us to count on. My way of working with this is to help clients become more aware of their own internal wisdom and connection to all things. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression , relational difficulties or just feeling overwhelmed. Listening to your story and using Somatic Experiencing, a mind/body approach, I work to help you find your sense of balance, curiosity, resilience, engagement, and vitality.

Over the course of my practice, I've worked with adolescents, transitional age individuals, and adults with anxiety, depression , and learning differences like ADHD.
Growth and change can be messy and lengthy, but it can be rewarding when you find solutions and strategies that best fit your needs, hopes, and goals. It's easy to get stuck or fall into routines that no longer serve us. It's sometimes hard to know where to start or how to feel. And that's okay. I aim to provide folks a warm, non-judgmental, and affirming space where they feel empowered to explore their thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. As we work together, I aspire to highlight a person's strengths, insights, and skills to guide them in learning new or different ways to tackle life's challenges.

Primarily through empathic listening cognitive oriented interventions and psychoeducation, I strive to help with difficulties related to anxiety, depression , uneven mood and cognitive impairment.
I primarily work with aging and/or disabled adults and caregivers coping with emotional and health care related challenges. Much of my work with clients focuses on adjustment difficulty related to declining health and diminished functional independence. Clients who are caregivers often struggle with managing career and family caregiving roles and also the needed transitions that can emerge in the latter half of life.

Do you find yourself feeling anxious, depressed or stuck? These are all areas I have extensive experience in and have been successful at helping clients work through. My approach to facilitating psychotherapy is to tune in to what has motivated a person (or couple) to seek help. I am a psychodynamic, relational thinker and apply that to the work I do. I draw from my 30 years experience helping people better understand themselves and the patterns they tend to engage in. The tools I use will depend on who you are and why you are seeking help.

MY PRACTICE IS CURRENTLY FULL. Supporting people during the prenatal, pregnancy and postpartum phases of life is my area of specialty. I also work with people who are living with infertility. The transition into parenthood can be emotionally complex and can lead to pregnancy or postpartum depression and anxiety. Before becoming a parent, there is the desire and decision to make a baby. For some, this phase is painfully long and can feel like an emotional roller coaster. In the postpartum, parent support is another aspect of my work. If you are experiencing difficulties such as these, please consider contacting me for support.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
