I have an extensive history of working with people who have suffered from depression, anxiety, low self esteem, grief / loss concerns, and marital difficulties.
If you give people tools, and they use their natural abilities and their curiosity, they will develop things in ways that will surprise you very much beyond what you might have expected. - Bill Gates. As a practitioner, it is my belief to provide tools and support to help you along your own personal journey to discover and create your best self. Self compassion, assertiveness, and positive healthy lifestyle habits are just a few tools that I focus on in order to lead to increase joy and better life satisfaction.

Shopping around for a qualified psychotherapist takes time. Even in the best of times it can be challenging to find someone you feel comfortable with. After years in the field, I am sensitive to the effort it takes to reach out for help when life is difficult; it can be even harder when you are an essential worker or are managing multiple roles during this pandemic. Working exclusively with adults (18+), my client-centered, insight-oriented focus can support you during the current crisis, to develop post-traumatic growth, and enable you to live fully.

I have 16 years of experience providing individual, couples, and family therapy in private practice, community mental health, and hospice settings. I believe in the power of authenticity and non-judgement of the self and others. Therapy involves understanding ones unique emotional experience, perceptions, self-talk, and patterns of behavior and relating. It is also essential to address self-esteem, assertiveness, and communication skills, as these will be the foundation for building healthy relationships.

As an experienced clinical therapist I work with a range of clients who are adults, adolescents, couples, and families, coping with stress, depression, anxiety and other life issues. Some clients have traumas, bereavement and are parents of or in the past have been substance abusers. Clients can and do move toward healthy life functioning through voluntary treatment at Changing Directions Counseling. An ideal client comes to session ready to learn new skills regarding thinking, feeling and behaviors and perhaps do exercises and plan for the future in treatment.

Spiritual and Religious Needs: Grief and loss issues associated with illness, death and other life transitions cut deeply into the soul and often require reassurance and support beyond psychotherapeutic counseling.
Almond Tree Counseling is a private home-based counseling service established to respond to the mental health needs of homebound adults and seniors. We have found that there are many people who are not able to make it to an office due to illness or other limitations and would welcome having a counselor meet them in their home. Our Goal at Almond Tree Counseling is to partner with you to address the transitional challenges of life and help improve your overall functioning through exploration, development of positive coping strategies and stress-management techniques.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
