My approach to therapy is person centered! I believe that building a strong therapeutic alliance, creating a judgment free environment, and that the ability to be empathic are all equally important regarding the therapeutic process. I apply an eclectic mix of individually tailored techniques and strategies in which the aim is to foster people’s increased functioning and optimal potential. Drawing from years of experience working as a clinical therapist, I have gained a comfortable grasp on working with multiple diagnoses as well as modalities including individual, couples, family, and group counseling.

Maybe it's anxiety or depression, or maybe you don't have a name for it and just want something to feel different. With a background as an educator and a counselor, I realize that just getting through the day, let alone achieving anything else, can feel overwhelming. In therapy, we can look at what's happened in the past, what’s going on now, and work with your strengths to help you start feeling better. I see youth (grades 7-12) and adults (18+) who might benefit from additional support in their lives.

The decision to come to counseling can be difficult. Taking that leap into the unknown can be scary. I believe an individual decides to come to therapy because they have tried everything they could to improve their situation but have become stuck. The goal in therapy is to assist the client in becoming ‘unstuck’ and taking steps towards a more rich and meaningful life. My "ideal client" is really anyone dissatisfied with how mental health is impacting their lives. I will work with you from a down to earth, non judgmental, solution focused, and accepting stance.

Not every dilemma is a disorder, not every sadness a sickness. While the pandemic, climate change, political polarization, all increase the awareness of existential threats, my clients seek to move toward value, value in relationships, in work, play, in nature. While acknowledging some validity of the concept of “mental disorders” and benefiting from my past working with it, they wish to move beyond the constraints of a diagnosis. Working collaboratively, we engage constructively with the full range of emotion while challenging automatic attachment to our default interpretations. Indeed, we are research guided, relationahip driven.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
