I integrate cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, play therapy , & mindfulness techniques.
From the very first session, I collaborate with clients and families to address their current challenges so that they can bring greater joy, peace, and acceptance into their lives. So often, our difficulties stem from unhealthy, long-standing patterns that weave through development and influence how we see ourselves, relationships, & the world around us. I help clients to deepen their understanding of their challenges and strengths in order to more effectively reach their goals.

Whether it be social or emotional struggles, challenging behaviors, trouble relating to others in positive ways, or working through fears, depression, stress, trauma, or a family crisis, I meet every child and their family where they are at. I use a strength-based approach and interactive, hands-on, and creative interventions, including play and expressive arts, in addition to talk that allow kids to communicate freely, naturally, and in ways that build confidence and a sense of mastery over their struggles.

Through the use of expressive therapies and play therapy , I aim to build a relationship where youth feel comfortable being exactly who they are and where all of the parts of themselves can come forward, knowing they will be met with compassion, curiosity, and care.
In a grief-averse society that says to "get over" or "move on" from the death of a loved one, in a medical system that pathologizes bereavement as a disorder as early as one year after someone's death, in social circles that force toxic positivity, platitudes, and unsolicited advice on grieving folks, I long to offer a different presence. I come alongside traumatically bereaved children and families to offer meaningful and non-judgmental support in the wake of an unexpected or violent death, or after a prolonged illness. Death and trauma generate complex grief responses that deserve to be heard, honored, explored, and integrated.

When we unlock our creative and playful potential, joy can blossom and grow. Through nurturing our creative self-expression, we can discover deeper avenues of empowerment, relationship (to self and others), and healing. As a Dance/Movement Therapist, I believe in the importance of the mind-body connection, and gently invite my clients to integrate breath, movement, music, poetry, embodied story-telling, art and other forms of imaginative expression into our sessions. I invite all who enter the healing space to tap into one’s innate ability to play and find their own empowered form of expression.

My practice includes play and art therapy, child and adult psychotherapy and analysis.
I have over 35 years experience working with children, youth, adults and couples. I help patients identify, focus and attend to what really matters to them and help them understand how to deepen their relationships. Many problems emerge in actual therapy sessions so that problem solving together can occur in the present. I work with people weekly and sometimes multiple times per week given my belief that change comes about from a earnest commitment to understanding ourselves. I help children and adults recognize their unique ways of thinking and experiencing relationships, and how self understanding promotes change and makes a happier and healthier life.

I use an eclectic approach with my clients, being solution focused and using such modalities as CBT, strength based therapy, play therapy , motivational interviewing and mindfulness.
What we endure in our lives can make the future cloudy and seeking help difficult. Acknowledging that you desire change is often the first step towards clarity. Many then find that they need further guidance, which is what has likely brought you here. I believe it is important for my clients to recognize and then use their strengths, past successes, supportive relationships (including the therapeutic one), and own hopes to obtain whatever goal they set forth. Moving forward I hope to build a strong, supportive, open therapeutic relationship which we can use toward a self-fulfilling and clear future.

We all long for our experiences, feelings, and needs to be seen, recognized, and honored. I bring to our work deep respect for you and/or your child’s concerns and suffering. I place the therapeutic relationship at the heart of our work, which I approach with curiosity and empathy. I am most interested in what your unique experience is, and I aim to listen deeply. A safe-enough space will help us to transform your patterns of experience that interfere with your ability to be compassionate with yourself, to build meaningful relationships, and to work and play creatively, in other words, to live a fulfilling life.

My career has followed many paths building inclusive communities prior to becoming a licensed psychologist. I provide a welcoming place for clients to explore and manage life's challenges and concerns, such as stress and anxiety as well as spiritual, religious, or existential questions. As a neuropsychologist, I offer comprehensive evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults. I also work collaboratively with parents and school staff to promote children's full academic, social, and emotional potential. I often use a Jungian approach to gain balance and well-being by appreciating strengths and less developed parts of the self.

Play Therapy

Who is play therapy for?

Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.

Why do people need play therapy?

Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behavior and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.

What happens in play therapy?

A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.

What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?

Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.

How long does play therapy last?

Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behavior.
