I have expertise treating anxiety disorders, panic, phobias and
Obsessive
-Compulsive Disorder with advanced training through the Behavior Therapy Training Institute (BTTI) and the International
OCD
Foundation.
CBT really works! Especially when you are working with a trained and experienced therapist. I hold advanced certification in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and use this approach exclusively. Together we will work to improve your insight, mood and motivation. You will learn what influences your mood and decision-making, and how ways of thinking and doing can lead to feeling stuck and hopeless. In addition to CBT, I can teach you powerful skills to improve distress tolerance and emotional regulation. These are skills you will learn to use now, and can rely on in the future. Let's get started!

When I meet my clients for the first time, we may decide to seek solutions to ADHD,
OCD
, anxiety or depression. Parents may be looking for a resolution to a child's school under-achievement, home conflict or social disconnection. In each situation, my belief is that therapy supports skill development and fosters a sense of balance, or equanimity.

Those with phobias can conquer their fears in the safety of my office and those with
OCD
can significantly reduce symptoms with the gold-standard treatment, Exposure and Response Prevention.
As a cognitive-behavioral psychologist, I help clients understand how thoughts directly impact feelings and behaviors. Clients and I will work together to identify the automatic thoughts that accompany feelings such as anxiety, sadness, frustration, and anger. When we're anxious or upset our thoughts are often inaccurate and overly negative. When we start listening to these thoughts we can learn to replace them with more accurate and constructive ones, ultimately resulting in more positive feelings and behaviors.

In addition to my practice, I am the Director of the Adult Intensive CBT Program at MGH and staff psychologist in the
OCD
Program at MGH / Harvard Medical School.
Anxiety can be debilitating for many of us. It makes us uncomfortable and avoid things, and we end up not participating in life the way we want to. My approach is to teach you the necessary skills, so that anxiety does not drive your life. I use the most current evidence-based treatments for anxiety. The CBT skills you will learn in treatment with me are well researched and have been shown to help people with anxiety improve their lives. I have focused on treating anxiety using CBT techniques throughout my education, training, and career.

One important point regarding my practice that may differ from other

As a Clinician with over two decades of experience working in Psychiatry at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, I have also been in Private Practice as a Therapist specializing in the assessment and treatment of

Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Depression and Stress/Loss of Chronic Illness. Because I found there were few if any professionally led groups for

I see individuals with a wide range of ages and presenting concerns, however I specialize in treating anxiety,
OCD
, and in adolescent psychotherapy.
With any and all presenting concerns, I provide a warm, non-judgmental environment. I have an integrative approach, with a particular focus on motivational enhancement, insight oriented exploration of past experiences, and when appropriate, specific tools and coping strategies. I use a number of research backed cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocols, which are proven to be effective in treating anxiety and depression. However, I am careful to use these methods in the context of a client centered and welcoming environment which accounts for an individual's particular needs, experiences, and readiness to change.

How long does OCD treatment take?
OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
