As a psychotherapist, I help clients better understand how we carry old wounds of hurt, loss and trauma into the present and how those wounds affect the way we manage our lives and relationships. Life stress--
marriage
/divorce, parenting, vocation, illness, loss--as well as the challenges of the lifecycle itself--young adulthood, midlife, senescence--can stir up old, unprocessed turmoil. Having been trained in psychodynamic, family systems and EMDR, I strive to attentively, compassionately and actively engage with my clients so that they might free themselves of old wounds and current impasses to live more loving and whole lives.

Adult Developmental Changes and Adjustments to new phases of life through the lens of normal adult development, with issues/feelings/symptoms that arise from these changes, including:
marriage
, divorce, parenting, second
marriage
, menopause, illness, empty nest, new priorities).
I am an experienced therapist, having been in private practice for 20 years after 10 years in the Psychiatry Department at MGH. A good fit is crucial for a pleasant, successful therapy, so developing a flexible, resilient relationship as we start is primary. I am interested, empathetic, and communicative, and sometimes very humorous and fun. I combine psychodynamic and behavioral approaches -- psychodynamic to help people understand why they react, feel, and behave in certain ways, and behavioral to then use that understanding to change automatic reactions, old behaviors and no-longer-useful ways of seeing themselves and connecting to others.

supporting couples through life-crises, trying to establish rules of "fairness" between partners, examining whether the mistake is staying together or splitting up, growing a stuck
marriage
.
I work with clients about their relationship issues. Sometimes this involves problems with partners, parents, siblings, or children and sometimes this is about the relationship a person has with him/her self.
The lack of meaningful/successful relationships is often a factor in people seeking therapy. The ensuing symptoms may be in the form of anxiety or depression.
I like to meet with the people involved in the relationship problems, although the therapy often starts with a series of solo appointment.
I view initial meetings as a consultation to check out the goodness of fit between a person's needs and my professional skills.

All of us have moments when we struggle with difficult relationships and environments. Sometimes we can continue on without addressing these issues and then they come to the forefront in the midst of a life transition like getting married, beginning a family or ending a relationship. Students come to me when they are struggling with challenging higher education systems. I also provide support to couples at all stages of their relationship for concerns including making the leap to commitment, navigating early
marriage
, transitioning to parenthood and adapting to the changes that are part of family life and long term relationship.

No one is born a parent. Parenting, and especially co-parenting, can be even more challenging when partners disagree, or when larger issues about the
marriage
or a divorce arise. I help parents understand how to be the best mothers and fathers they can be for their children, and how to work together to support them even under difficult circumstances.
I also work directly with couples and families experiencing conflict (together or as individuals), and can provide divorce and family mediation when needed.

How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
