I believe that much of life is mastering our underlying pain and fears , balancing self acceptance while pursuing growth to our better selves.
I've practiced psychotherapy for over thirty-five years. Currently I work both with individual adults and with couples. When you first meet with me, I will want to understand what brings you to therapy. My style is interactive, and I believe that it is through the safety of the therapeutic relationship, that goals can be met and change can occur. Though trained psychodynamically, I am comfortable working in a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities. When long-term yearnings go unfulfilled, when we encounter inevitable disappointments; when life jolts us internally or externally; when relationships seem difficult, therapy can be enormously helpful.

Is there a change or problem in your life to which you can’t quite adjust? Life presents us with many kinds of transitions – the death of a loved one, illness, divorce, separation, alcohol or drug problems in yourself or a loved one, health issues, and others – that can induce stress and anxiety . The good news is these indicators of stress may be the signal that you are on the threshold of a positive change. Counseling does not have to be a last ditch effort, undertaken only when you feel at your wit’s end. Instead, it can be a forum in which you can explore and experience yourself in a climate of safety and support.

Working primarily with adults, I am skilled at helping people with depression, anxiety , self-esteem, and trauma.
Feeling burdened? People come to therapy when they feel stuck, suffering, or passing through a life transition that shocks or baffles them. People come for help to learn to accept themselves or make changes in their lives. But, old habits get in the way of attaining goals, connecting with people, and enjoying the richness of life. There is therapeutic magic in understanding and expressing the internal parts of ourselves that feel in conflict. Here, you learn ways to quiet the inner dialogue enough so that you can feel free to listen and take action to promote your own well-being.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
