Christine M. Cunningham
Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LICSW, LADC-1
I have advanced training and years of experience helping those with substance abuse problems as well as identifying and dealing with the underlying issues that may drive the behaviors. Addictions often go hand in hand with other mental illnesses such as depression, trauma, anxiety, ADHD and bipolar illness. I also have advanced training in ADHD . My methods are non-judgmental and generally holistic, but I know enough about medications to be able to recommend when they may be needed. Life can lead us anywhere and it is my mission to make that a happier place for us all.

When I meet my clients for the first time, we may decide to seek solutions to ADHD , OCD, anxiety or depression. Parents may be looking for a resolution to a child's school under-achievement, home conflict or social disconnection. In each situation, my belief is that therapy supports skill development and fosters a sense of balance, or equanimity.

I am a pediatric neuropsychologist with a specialty in Autism. I also have years of experience assessing other referrals including learning disabilities, ADHD , anxiety and mood. I believe every lagging skill also offers a strength. My assessment approach is wholistic: In addition to traditional neuropsychological evaluation conducted in my office, I gather perspectives from teachers, caregivers, and other key individuals in your child's life. I prefer, when possible, to observe each child in one other setting outside of my office, usually school. My turn-around time from intake to report is one month. Currently booking May '22

I specialize in assessing and treating developmental disabilities such as autism, ADHD , learning disabilities, childhood depression, anxiety, and thought disorders.
I specialize in conducting neuropsychological evaluations for children and adolescents, ages 6 to 22. I am currently only taking clients for evaluations. The evaluations I conduct are invaluable to parents who are trying to understand their child's learning style and their learning strengths and weaknesses. Often, parents seek my help when they are concerned about their child's ability to achieve his/her potential in school and/or regulate his/her behaviors or emotions. My reports have been crucial tools for many parents in securing academic accommodations for their children both in the state of Massachusetts and elsewhere.

You want to talk about what's on your mind, but it's tough. You don't want someone to try to 'fix' you, give you unwanted advice, or make you feel judged. You want a confidential space where you can talk things out, reflect, and really be heard. I believe that you have a strong desire to grow and succeed within you, no matter how buried or blocked. You don't need people to tell you what to do, but maybe a space to slow down and make sense of things. I specialize in working with grad students, ADHD , men's issues, and relationship and interpersonal concerns. I also frequently provide support to other therapists.

People come to therapy for a lot of reasons, but many feel like they need a change from how things are. Some don’t know what it is that needs to change, and they want more insight about what new roads they might try walking down. Others know exactly the changes they want to make in their lives, but they need a safe place to say it out loud to themselves, and they want help along the way. Some can’t change their situation and still yearn to be at peace. Regardless of what brought you to session, my goal during our time together is to work with you to help you identify obstacles in your path.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
